who is/are the rotten core of the squad?

This is it for me, without evidence that some players are totally undermining everything in a sneaky 'rotten egg' type way then we just have to go with what we see on the pitch and that is that there are too many players that are either not good enough or have confidence issues.

There is a massive difference in not rating a player to actually thinking that they are just going around disrupting everything. There is a lot hyperbole about this squad, using words like 'rotten', fraud', etc. is not cutting it with me.
I agree. There were comments years ago about the likes of baines etc.

Benitez made out like James and Digne were bad apples.

Been a general feeling that Delph was a bad apple, but realistically, he was just injured all the time and didn't seem to buy into us.

Of the current squad, most players seem popular with the rest of the team with very few rumblings of unhappiness.

In reality, it's just that a lot of the players aren't good enough for what we want and seem to have awful confidence issues.

I don't think any of them are particularly bad influences, they're just cowards that are happy to do the bare minimum. Players like Keane, Doucoure, Gomes, Holgate etc.

So I suppose to answer your question, them.

I have asked this question before and can never get an answer, it's something that has troubled the club for a number of years now (so can't really say Dele) but there are rotten apples in that dressing room and they need to be turfed out.
It’s an endemic sense of mediocrity that seeps from Kenright throughout the club. All pervasive and has endured for 20 years. There is no other influence with the same time duration as him. Get him out (in full and with his acolytes in tow) and the restart button can be hit.

Calvert-Lewin
Godfrey
Alli
As an explanation of what went wrong last season, this is worse than useless. Alli wasn't getting any pitch time to speak of, Godfrey was injured for long periods when we were struggling most, and DCL was getting little service - not sure that any top flight team created fewer chances than us last season.

I'm not too sure that there is a lack of effort, I think it's closer to the truth to say that too many of the players lack quality and confidence and the squad lacks balance. We really do have a squad which has been built by several managers and just, for the most part, does not gel. Add to this the lack of quality in the midfield, which is alarming.

If we don't add a decent defensive midfielder and some creativity in the attacking midfield, we will be very lucky to stay up in my opinion. Without James, Digne and Richarlison, pretty much all the creativity has been ripped out of the team. You can add Iceland to that as well.

Replacing James and Sigurdsson with Gray and Townsend was always a shift down in quality, but little option due to financial constraints and whatever has gone on with Sigurdsson (writing off £40m+?)

We're in a similar place now it looks re bringing new players in but hopefully some will come

I believe fans are in some cases massively excessively harsh on players also - many of them are internationals or have been good at other clubs, hence why we've paid good money for them

In some cases confidence is shot - Michael Keane for example. Confidence / resilience should be a key quality to look for in new players I think to help boost the morale
