Why is America so ace?

I'm American, but I'm in awe of the English during WW2. I cringe to see "bailed out" used to describe America's intervention.

"We shall not flag or fail. We shall go on to the end. We shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be. We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender."

Well said.

Agreed ,you wait until you see who's winning then lend us trucks so you can say "we won it for you".

We're eternally grateful, although Hitler would have been saying the same thing had he been winning according to historical records detailing the yanks talking about doing a deal with him.

Above all things, Americans are opportunists.

I understand the non-intervention issue. Coming out of WWI and the US economy tanking and precipitating the Great Depression, spending cash we didn't have (apparently not a problem for us now) to fight in a war that really didn't involve us or seemed to be a continental European issue seemed reasonable. Until the Krauts were knocking on your front door, that is and then FDR kicked Lend Lease in gear over big Congressional opposition.

We need a catalyst to get moving sometimes.

Spanish American War - the bombing of the US Maine (fraudulent or not)
WWI - sinking of the Lusitania
WWII - Pearl Harbor
Korea - invasion by North Korean forces
Vietnam - Gulf of Tonkin incident with the US Maddox

I'll refrain from opening the Pandora's Box of why we've have had boots on the ground in the Middle East for going on 20 years.

We've got alot of Germans here. Lots of them. Fair to see how that might have come up. Hell, even Lindbergh was sweet on the Nazis but because he thought if we got rid of Hitler, we'd be opening up the West to the ravages of "Asiatic Communism". Don't make either right but it is what it is.

I'm not knocking the Brits, Churchill, their resolve or their efforts but facts are facts and if we hadn't gotten involved with the supply of materiel (Land Lease) and men (after Pearl Harbor), the Nazi invasion of the British Isles was in the offing. Or at least until Hitler **** himself by deciding to wage a land war, in Russia, in winter. If he had read a single history book about Napoleon, he would have concluded that Operation Barbarossa was really a **** idea.

I hadn't realised you were a veteran of ww2, mate. I thought you were younger.

In which case I am honestly grateful of your service. Good man.

I'm way younger. The last line is a quote from "A Few Good Men." I didn't have balls big enough to serve. My father did, my uncle did and my grandfather did. I got the sally gene.

Mostly of German ancestry, though it seems most are unwilling to claim it:

Tonight - well in 8 short hours, I'm packing my family into the car and setting off from Houston to, well as far as I can go East - till I need to stop and sleep! Then the following day we shall arrive at Disneyworld, Florida!

That's what I love about the USA. I can just get in my car and drive to some awesome places!

It IS without question - the land of opportunity! Good, honest, hard work is rewarded here! My move 4years ago has turned out to be the best decision I've ever made in my life. The quality of life I have over here in unparalleled in the UK - certainly with what I was doing before I left AND I had a decent quality of life in the UK.

Food is erm....so so. Some good, some bad - same as UK really.

Economy is certainly not in the doldrums like other parts of the world.

Cost of living is certainly cheap here in Texas. Not so much in NYC or California - but in Texas - without doubt - great standard of living at a fraction of the cost of the UK.

And finally - the weather! I love the sun!

What career do you have out in Texas??

Seems in a more level headed moment you realise we (the brits) fought unaided for 4 years and with the Russians doing their thing you might not actually be "protecting" us as protecting your own interests.

Oh and just for the record my grandfather was one of the last off Dunkirk destroying all the guns and ammo before floating a mile out to sea on a barrel cos all the boats had gone - fortunately a navy frigate picked him up - we don't give up in our country. Best you remember that before spouting "protecting us" shte.

Oh yeah and when it's St Patricks day it's "St Paddy's" "Not Patty's" lol but i guess there might have been confusion by the way you pronounce "dd" & "tt" in words coz you make them sound the same.

Most of those were just catalysts, though. You were already gearing up for war in pretty much all cases. That just made it sooner rather that later.
