Will next season be a write off?

With us apparently putting long and intensive work into finding a new manager and the summer recruitment plans recently discussed between Brands & Carlo more than likely being thrown out the window, added with the probability of the new manager wanting to keep hold of his current players to see what they’re capable of before any exodus, will next season be a write off for you? Or in other ways will it be a free hit for the manager?
What should the expectations be as is currently?
Every season is a write off unless mid-table fodder is what we're aiming for.

It shouldn't be. The only reason it would be is incompetence.

The Everton hierarchy love an excuse. Let's not give it to them by giving them an out straight off.

New man should be in by the end of June. Brands should be transferring demonstrable failures out of the club at the same time. Big signings should be happening in July. New manager should be told that he gets us Europe or a Cup or his position will be reviewed at the end of the season. Mitigating factors would be derby wins, style of football, and a measurable sense of progression.

If Everton really want to bridge the gap to the top, they've got to stop being soft touches. We'll have a very good idea next May if the new man is any good. We could have predicted Koeman and Silva would be duds before they arrived. Some of us did. Carlo brought us wins at places we hadn't won at in years - as we felt he eventually would. Big Sam kept us up playing Big Sam football - as we knew he would. The only real surprise over the last decade was Roberto having such a stellar first season - but he was a busted flush by the time of a 3-0 defeat at Southampton before Christmas in the second season. And then we left it drag on for another 18 months...even though we knew he was spent.

The new guy needs to win us a cup or get us into Europe or both. Anything else is treading water. If he doesn't think he can do that, he should do an Antonio Conte and say "I am not convinced". We need fellas who are genuinely convinced they can do this. More to the point, we should be convinced they can too.
A Cup and European football, not asking much lol.

A lot depends on the manager and transfers but seeing a plan being implemented that can improve us and move us forward sustainably is good enough for me this season. If we're going to continue firing managers every year because we're not in Europe we'll never get there.

The cry for instant success is unrealistic and unhelpful.

no but you can probably give the benefit of the doubt in certain situations, Not expecting any manager to come in and take us to the glory land if Ancelotti can't.
I think, though, that we shouldn't be giving anyone the benefit of the doubt - especially not the board. Of course the new man will have a certain amount of sympathy as he takes on the role, but at the end of the day he is the appointment of the board. I was thrilled with the capture of Carlo, but I have been adamant that this summer's transfer window would dictate whether Carlo could take us into the top six or not. We never got to find out. If they had not provided him with the players he needed to be a success, then that would be on the board.

If the new man does a Carlo and has us winning at Anfield, the Emirates, White Hart Lane, and Leicester - and beating Chelsea and Arsenal at home - then he'll more than likely get a grudging pass from me even if the overall home record is poor. But to be completely honest, Carlo got that pass simply because of his demonstrable history of success, his ability to attract players we couldn't otherwise, and a sense that the club would simply have to back him this summer because otherwise...what was the point of hiring Carlo Ancelotti?

Now, we may have been too generous with the last reason, but overall most of us were reasonably confident Carlo was the right man for the job and we certainly couldn't blame the board for appointing a man of such proven excellence. The new guy is very unlikely to get any of those "mitigating" factors in his favour next season. And that's on the club.

So, yes, the new man will have my sympathy - but not necessarily my confidence. And if that is the case, the board will have even less of my confidence. It's on them to get somebody any reasonable person can get fully behind. That's the standard they should be held to. Otherwise, it's spoofery and Evertonians need to accept our kindred spirits are not Liverpool and co, but Newcastle, West Ham, and Leeds.

I thought Martinez's first season would be a write off particularly with those first 3 games being 3 draws on the bounce but we then took off.

Whereas this season just gone the opposite happened. Hard to tell but depends on recruitment ultimately. We need 5-6 players (back up GK/CF + 4 starting 11 players) to really make a go of it imo.

We've won one trophy in nearly 30 years, but I'm sure this sounded good in your head

3 need to be midfielders a cm and a pair of wingers... all with some pace. A backup GK an RB, thats 5 along with maybe a loan or 2 and replace anyone we sell.

For me I think we need:

RB/RWB depending on system
RW
CM
CB
back up CF
back up GK

Would like an extra CM but think thats unrealistic in one window - Doucoure, Allan, Davies + a top drawer CM would be a decent enough 4 for at least this season you would hope.
