All ways get equal side lines or dummy vents. Cost a little bit more but so worth it . That way u can’t tell which window opens. Take a look in your street and use will notice the difference

If the frames are ok then it’s considerably cheaper (at least 60% cheaper!) to replace the glass.
I’ve been on hundreds of building sites and have seen windows installed in every way imaginable, normally the people fitting them would struggle getting halfway through a crossword puzzle in the daily sport. The most recent lot I saw installed were all without a single screw being used and the window being held in position with no nonsense expanding foam, they charged £14.5k (2 bay windows, patio door, front door, 4 small windows, 3 medium windows, 3 large windows all with opening mechanisms) and the 3 of them took 2 days to fit all of them. The silicone sealant was applied and finished with one of their chubby little digits after a good licking and looked about as neat as Susan Boyles lady garden.
Absolutely avoid Zenith, Anglian, Safestyle, Everest and any of the other big boys, you will be paying at least 50% more than if you used a local reputable tradesperson.

We recently did a full terrace rebuild - tear down all old panels etc., new Ytong structure, removed old metal-framed noisy rattling windows - and replaced the trash with brand new double glazed windows, opening/tilting every odd window etc., a total of 3 units of those, so 3x3 windows + PVC frames and all that for like €2.5k.

I read the second post here that someone got a quote for marginally less work that somehow will be 17k quid and was close to throwing myself out of above-mentioned terrace tbh.

Ours are of a similar vintage but the frames are still very fresh and look almost as new, it's a 100 year old bay windowed house so replacement of frames is not cheap. Only issue we've had really is that all the glass panels started "blowing" steaming up within a very short space of time of each other.

Local double glazing chap known to us and a great bloke agreed it's a shame to junk the frames and said he could replace all glass cost effectively, which he did. Most expensive window as it's the biggest was the kitchen which cost just over 200 quid fitted, the other glass worked out at between 50-120 quid a panel dependant on size. All good and snug again now for just over 1k.

I’d go with the acoustic glass personally, but triple glazing might be better for selling on. As others have said, avoid the big companies and ask around for some recommended local tradesman. A small company has a lot more on the line than these big companies who will likely make a balls up of it anyway by pushing their builders to work too quickly.

Most good fitters will be FENSA registered and you can get a 5-10 year warranty through them. If you have any problems in the future you can essentially grass on them.

A lot of the big companies subcontract out too, so if anything goes wrong, it can be very difficult to get anyone to fix the problem or accept responsiblity too.

Just avoid the big companies full stop.

Huge mark up in price. Hard sell tactics. We had all ours done in our old house, first quote about 15k, we said this is about 8k more than the other quotes so he immediately gets his calculator out and knocks about 6k off. Had to ring his boss a lot to try and get us a price we'd agree to there and then. Pretty much had to force him out in the end, just wouldn't go away.

As someone said they out source installations as well, so some poorly trained prepubescent fitter will do them with lots of foam and plastic trims to cover up the pigs ear they've made of it.

I've always gone to sole traders who've been in the game for a while and do the lot themselves. Generally no messing about with the prices.

The fensa thing can be taken care of with by the buyer taking out indemnity insurance if you sell the house

Yes .
They wedge them in and foam.
Mad...

Just as a bit of advice in regards to general upvc window maintenance, all parts, glazing unit hinges lock mechanism rubber seals etc, are easily replaced and relatively cheap to buy.
Happy to advise anyone if they need any guidance
And easy to fit. I would have done my windows but I wanted the guy to do the bays as they were really tricky.. Which proved right. He said they were a nightmare.. haha

We touched lucky with ours, fella next door was a window fitter and him and his mates did it as a foreigner. Cost us 2.5k I think, was a few years ago now.

We had to get triple glazing due to how low our windows are. We replaced old normal windows so the difference was quite noticeable.
What flavour did you get

@Kurt. was asking

I need to replace my house windows. They're 20 odd years old, and a bit battered. Water was pissing in through one the other day and as I'm hanging out a window risking my life repairing the seal I figured wtf I run Evertons premium fan site so I could just buy new ones. I think. I've no clue what they cost but I'll find out next week.

Seeing as though GOT resembles dadsnet nowadays I thought I'd ask on here.

Im thinking triple glazing, but apparently double glazing with acoustic glass is better for sound proofing - which is a priority to prevent me shooting some owls @marnie

Has anyone had 20+ year double glazing replaced? If so, what did you go for and did you notice a difference with noise/temperature?
Tripple glazing only if exposed location or a noisy road nearby - otherwise double should be surface make sure they Insulation is spot on on all windows with insulation foam- which sounds like the last firm who fitted them did not do!
