In terms of spelling being different to pronunciation, I would say a Lieutenant is higher up the ranking than a Colonel.

I really dislike offended. Everyone seems to be easily offended these days and people are overly concerned that they may offend other people.

My favourite is the recent trend for 'the restaurant owner apologised and offered a gift voucher as compensation, but Janet said that an apology wasn't good enough'. No, it never is, is it?

It stems from the compensation culture whereby if services aren't perfect then they expect excessive reparations which are simply unnecessary.

A colleague and I bought a few pint from a pub not long ago and they were off; he went on to ferociously complain about the poor service.

I politely asked for another, thank them when I got a different ale and happily drank it. Sorted...
