Working from Home….

Can’t WFH due to the nature of my work (unless they can figure out how to fit a few hundred grands worth of industrial machinery into my living room lol )

My mate does it though, 3 from home, 1 at the office and a one on call (he’s a senior telecoms engineer) Speaks highly of how much less stressful his working week is as a result. Work still gets done to a high standard and the positives far outweigh the negatives.

Those shouting out against it seem to be the usual angry tory mouthpieces who see working people as too untrustworthy to be left directly unsupervised. See Johnsons “working from home does not work and that when he tried to do so he became distracted by making coffee and eating cheese” nonsense.
Also a fair few Tory landlords loosing a ton on their city center office block rentals as various organisations downsize their office space.

So Covid originally drove this but now seems to be part of life. However it may end up being not quite so clever…..

“ The boss of electronics and white goods seller AO World has warned that staff working from home could find their jobs outsourced overseas.

John Roberts also told the Bolton-based retailer's 3,000 employees that 'hybrid working', when staff come into the office only intermittently, was banned.

'Working from home, you might as well be working abroad, which is only a step away from outsourcing,' he said, warning that cheaper workers could be sourced in places such as Bangalore in India.”

Anyone here wfh….
I would really hope that bosses such as this one are in the minority. They obviously don't value their staff which is their loss ultimately as it means better employees are going to work elsewhere, and those that remain will certainly not be going above and beyond.

It's a management style that really doesn't make sense to me.

Oh, I wfh 2 days each week, love it

On this point a place in a place i used to work there was no option to any work from home. My role involved alot of funding applications and reporting and i worked in a very busy building.

Any time i requested to head home to get some peace and quiet to do the work i was told that wasn't an option. Even though my manager consistently would have days working at home to do similar tasks that i wanted to do at home even though she had a private office that was quiet.

Then when deadlines were hitting and she was under pressure i was being asked to go home after my 10pm shift finish and work at home to make changes to applications i had completed and sent days before the deadline because she had not looked at them.

Some people just aren't cut out for management when their approach is to mistrust staff when all evidence shows the work gets done on time.

I never missed a funding application deadline whereas that manager caused me to lose almost 50% of my staff when i was on leave as she didn't return a funding application fully completed.

I've wfh (desk job) since last September after 24 years working outdoors. There is some pressure to show your face in the office occasionally but it'd add two hours to my day so I resist.

Benefits of wfh are: no commuting costs/time, no money spent during the day, the dog gets more walks, less exhaust smoke for the world, I don't have to talk to any kopites.

Drawbacks: Only see colleagues on Teams, easy to get into habit of making mistakes at work with nobody present to correct you, no banter, a complete lack of exercise in winter on days it rains, the union say they don't get involved in domestic disputes and won't represent me in my grievance aimed at getting the Mrs back to her office at least 4 days a week.

My employer isn't taking on anymore FT wfh staff due to unused office space. Business sense would say they should downsize the offices. Anyways, the main reason I see out there for people being forced back into the office is managers/team leaders who want to micro-manage staff.

It’s working out quite well for my daughter who has a nine month old child. It’ll be interesting to see if jobs do move, civil service from London to anywhere in the U.K. for instance, and many companies will see it as a way to reduce building/office/power costs. It’ll probably take another five years for a wfh modus operandi to really take root……

To be honest a lot of jobs have already been out sourced to the likes of India already.

A lot of the big engineering firms have design teams setup in India already and have been for quite a number of years already.

Indeed, we did similar and also transferred Indian staff to the USA at one point……
