Really surprising to see that happen at such a normally well run meet. Some of those people won't be back, probably not even today.
Just catching up on last nights' events. What an incredible performance in the 1500m by Jake Wightman, don't think I've ever shouted at my TV so much watching athletics. The balls to put in that kick and go pass Ingebrigtsen with 150m to go was something else.
Boss that his dad was the stadium’s announcer calling his son home.
Got to feel a bit for Matthew Hudson Smith, running really good times but in a crazily loaded era for the 400m

Incredible really.
Lyles running the 4th fastest time ever, and Jackson running the 2nd fastest time ever. And im so happy for DAS, she would have had to produce something super special to do any better than bronze and it just reflects the level of womens sprinting currently

To be honest, being a big fan of athletics and a T&F athlete myself, most athletics events dont sell out in most countries. And most true athletics stadiums that aren't multi purpose, are similar if not smaller than that.
In the UK, we generally do a decent job of attracting crowds (for olympics, worlds, commonwealths), but having attended 2 diamond league meets last year in Gateshead, even with crowd reductions for covid, in much smaller stadium than Eugene, they were far from sold out and they had cutouts in the seats to make it look fuller.

I'd say the womens' was even moreso, being the 2nd fastest time ever, only beaten by those old 1980s women's sprint records, that mostly came out of nowhere.

TBF, the evening sessions are usually rammed for World Championships. At Eugene the daytime sessions look very sparsely attended and the evening sessions look about 2/3rds full.
This is all down to Seb Coe doing favours for Nike.

I've just been reading about it. Eugene originally put forward for the 2019 champs which went to doha (again about money, but also i recall attendances not being great, in fact, fairly terrible), then in 2015 was awarded the 2021 champs with no bidding process. The same year that Coe became president.
Hayward Field has undergone a $270m renovation since 2018, so is top of the line facilities and the track is clearly quick. I reckon they were hoping for a few more world records. There's a lot of history for athletics in Eugene and it will be a big deal for a lot of athletes, but it's is clearly there because of money.
Hayward is easily a top-5 track stadium in the world and maybe has the best atmosphere for big events, but Dayv's gonna Dayv.
Diamond League events get a good turnout, but a turnout for a single day finals =! a turnout for 10-day event. Let's see what the crowds are like over these last 3 days.
