World Snooker Championship

He would be put under massive pressure by the players today and could have cracked.

I’ve watched old videos and his opponents were sitting ducks
Peak Jimmy White was an excellent player. The difference is not as great as people like to make out. And he has plenty of wins against Ronnie, including a final frame 147 in the Charity Challenge, which is one of the best matches ever.

White was the only player. Ronnie was young and immature

Even the likes of Lisowski today with their scoring ability would pin Hendry back imo - let alone the big guns

Hendry had it easy imo and that gave him the confidence to blast through people

Hendry has winning records against the likes of Williams and Hunter, is even with John Higgins and is only slightly behind vs. Ronnie.

Given how his game degenerated at the end it seems pretty clear he would be extremely competitive in today's game.

I actually think Steve Davis would have been able to raise his game too had he come along later.

Different eras - cues, tips, the green baiaz all different, plus tighter pockets etc

I mentioned it earlier in the thread but I remember watching the Ronnie vs Higgins 2001 final and thought that was the point at which the game had entered a new era of quality. The overall consistency of standard of both players was something I hadn’t seen before.

Let’s be honest White was flashy but fragile but both of those 2 had quality and steel in abundance. I’m not saying Hendry didn’t lose his focus, because he definitely did, I just think he played in a weaker era than now. Higgins and Ronnie’s peaks came well into the 2000s and thats the level against which Hendry should be judged.

Hendry is the most dominant player ever, but Ronnie is the greatest player ever - the way he has sustained his level for 30 years is absolutely incredible as the game as gone through so much change during that time. Most snooker players are past their peak by the time they are 35 and a shadow of their prime by the time they're 40 if they're even still playing the game.

Even though Williams and Higgins are still around, they are not as good as they were in their prime, whereas today's Ronnie would give 25yo Ronnie a damn good match.

And yet Hendry beat John four out five times that season, though Ronnie beat him three out of four, including a come from behind victory in the Irish Masters final. The next year he beat Ron in the semis at the Worlds 17-13 in a brilliant performance.

I guess the bigger difference is younger players had learned from Hendry's game and could compete with him in a way his peers couldn't.

Best Ronnie for me was 2004. Only guy I could see having a chance at beating him (in a world final) is peak Hendry. John Higgins at his best as well, perhaps.

The fact Hunter beat him at the Masters shows how much potential he had.

Those couple of years where he demolished Hendry at the SF stage he was incredible
