World Snooker Championship

Selby has definitely found the bit of form again over the last six months or so. He's beginning to become the most consistent player on the circuit once again. If he can get his head right, there are more titles there for him. That said, I wouldn't read too much into these tournaments. There's only one that really matters. Happily for Selby, that one is over a course that suits him as much as anybody.

Lisowski is a talented player, but he's not got the mentality to compete with the true greats. In fact, tonight's match is a classic example of the difference between the great and the good. Jack can pot as well as anybody. But in terms of shot selection, resilience, strategy, and all-round cunning, he's out of his depth against the likes of Selby. Top level sport is played in the head. They can all "play". Only the select few play it upstairs when the pressure's really on.

Looking at the match stats, Lisowski's actually done well to lose 5-4, given that his opponent hit a century, two 90s, and two more half centuries. But if Jack is being utterly outgunned in the balls, he's not got a prayer against Mark Selby (who, by the way, is massively underrated in terms of his break-building). Selby is quite possibly the greatest all-round match player of all-time. Great safety, great strategy, great in the balls. Up there with John Higgins in terms of the overall game. So, I wouldn't be too hard on Jack. He's good, but he was up against great.

Nice to see Mark Williams back in the last four. Tough semi for him, though, against Hossein Vafaei.

If Selby gets to the final, you'd have to fancy him over the longer match, but anyone left can win this now. Snooker's standard is so high now where anybody can beat anybody on a given day. You can, therefore, only truly rank the players on consistency over multiple tournaments and seasons and over the long-haul matches. That's why Brecel's world title was so special. He beat Williams and O'Sullivan over 25 frames and somehow outlasted Selby over 35. Talk about hard-earned.

Selby and Williams although cut from different stuff are legends in their own right. Lisowski can still get there, it's no concentration, I'd have him sat with a blindfold on so he can't see his opponent. Their luck and shots etc seem to get to him.
