World Snooker Championship

A whitewash.

The final promises to be a classic. Two fantastic players. Very different styles - but they have one thing in common: these two are the greatest mind players in the history of the game. Both are almost impervious to pressure. They feel it, for sure. It sometimes causes them to err. But they are, surely, the two most mentally resilient players in history in that even if the pressure gets to them or the going gets tough, they have this uncanny ability to immediately focus on the next shot or frame. It's not simple talent that has earned them seven world titles between them.

Williams is my favourite player but I see Selby winning it tomorrow. Seems to be continuing his form from last season.

Williams is wonderful. The question for me is does he believe he can beat Selby. If he does, we could be in for a classic. If he doesn't, you'd normally back Selby to win comfortably. I thoroughly enjoy both players for different reasons. While Selby is definitely showing signs of returning to his position at the top of the game - he was consistently the best player in the world for half of the last decade - he is nothing like as imperious as he was at his peak (largely due to his well-documented struggles). Tomorrow will indicate whether he has the capacity to get back to those heights. I think he gives players chances these days that he didn't. In fact, I think he might look back at this year's world championship as one he "should" have won. But I find his journey fascinating. And Williams in 2018 was just one of the most astonishing achievements ever in snooker. That final was immense. John Higgins, despite losing, was phenomenal. And yet Williams never flinched when he really should have crumbled.

I'm really looking forward to this.

Classic Selby. He almost always finds a way to hang on to the coattails when the going is tough. At 5-1, most players would, at best, get out 6-2 down. Some would collapse 7-1. Not Selby. Two in a row to give Williams something to ponder. Things is, Williams is about the only player in the world who won't ponder anything. So, my take on this final is Selby needs to step it up a gear if he is to win. Other players would be looking over their shoulder with a sense of foreboding, but not Williams. All to play for.
