World Snooker Championship

He was 8-5 up as well. Saying that, Mark Williams failed to qualify in 1996, and he's not doing to badly nowadays.
True enough, but Williams is a genius-level player with an iron mentality who, basically, had other things to do in his life. Robertson - technically brilliant - never had that mental armour and it's why he will be forever stuck on the same number of world titles as Joe Johnson and Graeme Dott. That's not meant to be disrespectful to either of those excellent players who played blinding world championships on more than one occasion - it's simply to suggest a player with the gifts of Robertson comparatively underachieved while those two, to their credit, exceeded their abilities.

I think this could be a watershed world championship. Some of the old guard look finished to me (Robertson, Higgins, Selby) and I think there's a lot riding on this world championship for people like Judd Trump and Mark Allen. Trump really should be dominating this event now given the gap left by the demise of Robertson and, particularly, Selby. O'Sullivan could do anything - but most likely will win again. If Trump does not win this year, I'd wonder when he will win again. He needs to make hay. As for Allen, now or never, I think.

The draw throws up a few intriguing possibilites. O'Sullivan and Trump are in the same half, so it is immediately lop-sided on this season's form.

Luca Brecel v David Gilbert
Robert Milkins v Pang Junxu
Ali Carter v Stephen Maguire
Shaun Murphy v Lyu Haotian

Luca Brecel - who I think may fall to the Crucible Curse - has got a tough opener on paper, and you'd have to make Ali Carter favourite in this first quarter, even if Maguire and Murphy might fancy their chances.

Mark Selby v Joe O'Connor
Kyren Wilson v Dominic Dale
John Higgins v Jamie Jones
Mark Allen v Robbie Williams

The second quarter is intriguing. Mark Allen has to start favourite, but Mark Selby won a similar section last year, beating both John Higgins and Allen to make the final. An in-form Selby would likely do the same again this year, but he's woefully out of touch and might even fall victim in the Leicester derby if his heart's not in it.

Judd Trump v Hossein Vafaei
Tom Ford v Ricky Walden
Zhang Anda v Jak Jones
Mark Williams v Si Jiahui

In the third segment, Trump might have it tough. Get out of this and he might very well be ready to win a second crown. Vafaei is a horrible opener, and Tom Ford would be tricky if he gets over Ricky Walden. Zhang is a serious danger in the last 16 for Mark Williams, assuming he puts away Si, last year's breakthrough semi-finalist. On current form, he should.

Ding Junhui v Jack Lisowski
Gary Wilson v Stuart Bingham
Barry Hawkins v Ryan Day
Ronnie O'Sullivan v Jackson Page

The final quarter is also fascinating, full of players who have done it before or have something to prove (sometimes both). You'd expect O'Sullivan to make it through, but it's not without its perils. The only prediction I'll make is that this tournament will be won by whoever emerges from the bottom half - unless Mark Selby discovers something in his most natural environment: the long-haul slog. I don't expect him to, but if he does all bets are off.
