Jobs.

For me;

Worst Job

I've had a fair few with various temp agencies while funding Uni, but perhaps the stand out for me was computerising doctors notes. My job was to go through warehouse after warehouse, and pull out hand written doctors notes from 1900 (like the type that used to be put at the end of a patients bed in hospital), and scan them all.

Massive dusty folders that you had to unpick staples/paperclips etc, and flatten and try an scan. It was a scanner that pulled through pieces of paper like a printer and half the time it would clog. Monotonous, and the amount of obscure stains you hoped at best was blood was a nightmare for a germaphobe.

Other decent shout outs are the insolvency service in liverpool - my job was to destroy case notes. Data entry too for podiatry department. Spending the days typing up handwritten notes about feet.

Best Job

Aintree racecourse - the national sold out itself, and there was 5 additional race meets. Brilliant place to work, super friendly team, massive scenic venue. Only left because you was only busy for about 5 weeks of the year and it was pretty low pay. Shame as well as I wasn't far off managing to use every toilet in the place at least once.

Current Job

I work for myself in digital marketing - stressed to the eyeballs as a self employed. If anyone ever needs help with digital marketing, i'm your man, 90% Everton moaning, 10% work.

Your turn - worst job, best job, current job.

Worst Job: Pot washer for a really evil Slavic man in a pub. Got paid like 50p and he was worse than an SS officer with me.
Best Job: Milk round. Honestly. Bloody loved it, £27 for 2 nights after school at 15 was millions. Got super fit and had massive hands. Unlimited free milk and orange juice too.
Current Job: Project Planning Manager. It's okay, lots of pointless meetings, lots of rubbish people, can WFH though.

Worst - working in a nightclub at Uni. Terrible hours, weekends became nocturnal. Dealing with mangled people was horrendous too, particularly at like 2am when you can't be arsed and they're chewing your ear off about pure waffle.

Best - worked very briefly for a streaming service in their marketing team. I got paid pretty well and did literally nothing. During the pandemic, I was lucky enough to keep my job.. ended up lying on the sofa all day long and just moving the cursor every so often so it looked like i was still online. Got away with murder, not sure why i actually left!

Current - work in media. It's sound. Pays well, good work/life balance, not many complaints.

Worst: Royal Mail. Lasted 2 days and was going to be sacked if i was late again on the 3rd. My mate worked there full time and give me a lift so for him being late meant nothing. I was agency temp and all the people that started at the same time as me were as dull as could be. 8hrs shifts of no-one talking. I got a decent cheque for tax rebate when i got home after my 2nd day so never went back.

Best: Smyths Toys: For 3 years i used to work at Smyths from October - Christmass Eve doing night shift sorting deliveries and stacking shelves in the lead up to Christmas. No dealing with customers and the run of a toy shop all night. Always creating some sorts of mayhem/pulling pranks. Plus at 18 it paid well.

Current: Main Job is Head Of Financial Services in the public sector. I'm also self employed and deliver accredited training/Assessment/Internal Verifier support to a number of organisations that deliver training. On top of that i do some work for local youth and community organisations working with groups of young people. And i also am a bank worker for one of the large Universities over here and get sporadic bits of work to support students while on placement from their degrees.

Worst job: didn't have one, I enjoyed the daytime job I had.
Best job: Strapping on a guitar and gigging in bands from January 1969 to September last year, when I finally retired from gigging.
Current: After 42 years, still researching and writing on the Messerschmitt Bf 110 in particular, and the Battle of Britain in general.

Worst: A meat processing factory. Cultish, unfriendly atmosphere. I was a general dogsbody, cleaning fat off the floors in the boning halls. It would get you very fit, though I never saw Rocky Balboa avail of one of the hanging carcasses.

Best: Hard to say really. I don't think I can answer that at the moment. I do know that I won't need to do anything that rivals my worst job so maybe the best one is yet to come hopefully.

Current: Senior Analyst for an Investment Bank. It isn't as high-flying and glamourous as it may sound, but I've been doing it for 20 years and if I say so myself, I'm quite good at it.
