Worst Squad Since Early 2000s

Can’t think of any worse/less likeable squads we’ve had since the early 2000’s.

Even that mad period where we didn’t sign a player for money for about 2 years and had Magaye Gueye flying down the wing was better than this.

Who have we got who goes on to better things from this group? Branthwaite, DCL, Pickford?

Horrendous levels of apathy and like it or not our fate is in their hands here.
Until I see these players being coached by an actual football manager who understands tactics , even at a basic level , I’ll reserve judgement on the majority of our players.
A great coach can make a good team out of average players.
A poor coach can make an average team look poor .
We have the latter.

I watched 9 men behind a ball for 60 minutes. Which included a flat back 4 and flat midfield 5. Only pushing in singulars when the ball entered our half

I watched both Harrison Armstrong and Jack Harrison, on 2 separate occasions, having 3 people around them because nobody wanted to leave their position.

The players may not be brilliant players but they are massively held back by the tactics on offer.

We had no intention of taking that game to Southampton tonight. We were happy to play for set pieces and the odd counter attack

It was pure aids

Let down by tactics, but this squad really is full of tripe. Poorly assembled, zero pace, no one can finish, zero functioning full backs.

Bin off Dyche, but hope Thelwell follows shortly after. Recruitment is arse.
Disagree on pace Ndia fast, Harrison can be(was at Leeds) DCL and Beto are both quick, the squads got no confidence that’s half the problem and the manager isn’t helping at all.
You tell me, what is our actual tactic? Cos it feels like, sit 9 behind the ball, then boot it and run after it

There are only 3 PL level defenders in the entire squad (O’Brien could be at some point). Our old players are too old, young players are too young, and the guys in the middle mostly suck.

There were fullbacks available, far better than what we have, and their clubs wanted them off their books. Not getting one on loan is just tragic.

It doesn’t absolve the manager of his role in this, but the squad is bereft of talent in far too many areas.

I know there seems to be this argument that it’s on the coach or the players but let’s be honest it’s never one single thing and it can be both. I see people complaining that they can’t play a 5 yard pass. Well, that’s been talked about since the Martinez days and there’s been what, 6 or 7 managers since then? None of which could really get any kind of consistent tune out of the players. The worse the club gets the worse the players you’re going to be able to get are, so there is going to be regression of the squad year on year.

Dyche, Lampard, Allardyce, Benitez etc are all bad managers, where you know what you’re getting before they’ve even managed a game and I think the others in this period are more of a product of a system that doesn’t allow anybody to thrive and you’re left with more regression in who you can get to manage a squad that’s getting worse and worse. Equally new players are getting put in a really bad position too.

Ultimately this is just a garrulous post saying sometimes the manager is bad, they squad is going to be bad due to who you can bring in and what they’re being put into and the common denominator is the upper echelons of the club and the culture they have cultivated. I remember this was being moaned about in the Jagielka, Baines, Osman boys club era so it’s nothing new it’s just on another level of awful.

I guess you tear the whole thing down or pray you get another generational talent like Rooney.
