Young EFC Players Out On Loan 16-17

Why is that? Sometimes we tend to think that the lower league clubs are like Oliver, waiting for any scraps that are thrown their way from the top table. In fact, they often have a decent choice of potential youth loans from all of the clubs at levels above them (not just PL) even if they decide that they want to trust a young inexperienced player rather than an old pro in their first team.

Yates is, I believe, too old for the U-18s. That means that he would be playing for the U-23s if a) Unsworth thought he was the best option and b) we didn't already have better or similar level or younger development players for his position (right-back). We might also consider that he would benefit at this stage from regular playing time and (possibly) from seeing what life is like in the lower leagues.

The loan is until January - hopefully it will give him game time and experience that he might not get here.

A good summary. At England U17 level Yates never looked as good as Kenny did playing at that level. Then he just stopped progressing , didn't make England teams and last season when he was eligible for our u18s there were times when Callum Lees was preferred over him at right back, maybe injuries were involved I don't know.
If hes down to play in their u23s then at least he'll get game time. Crewe are a Category 2 Academy so their level is below ours, and it may mean that some of their players are part time. Crewe is near enough for him to benefit from FF and travelling to Crewe for training and matches.

Plus I read somewhere that Unsy has over 30 players in his under 23 squad. That's a lot of players to rotate even without including first teamers coming back from injury lay-offs. There's a lot of players from last seasons highly rated under 18s that haven't had a look-in yet.

If hes just with their u23 side though and not in a first team then its just like reserve football isnt it?

Perhaps im misunderstanding this loan. Arent the u23's just like a reserve team? Meaning hes gone out on loan to crewe reserves?

Id have expected him to go out for 1st team football somewhere...

why? hes nowhere near good enough for a league club to take as it is at the minute.

...just worth noting, I understand the scope of Steve Wash's role includes the Academy. I guess he's almost as closely working with the youth coaches as with RK. I assume he has the overview, ensuring a joined up, integrated approach through the various age groups and assessing who progresses and who is let go.

you'd like to think so, you'd hope if koeman comes to him and said he needs a right back walsh would realise we have a couple in the u23s that look ready to be at least cover for coleman.
he does watch the the games live while koeman doesnt appear to. could be wrong.

....I suspect that's part of the reason, more specifically evaluating if a player should step up or should we go to the market. Unsworths evaluation last season was that a large number of players could step up from the current crop, I suppose SW is assessing that view.

Well, other than when we loaned Dier have you ever heard of anyone loaning a player for their reserve team?

David Henen a couple years back. Manchester United had to loan a defender from Bolton a couple years ago, too.

This doesn't seem like a move made for the benefit of Everton (unlike the rest of the loan deals). Even though it doesn't sound like Yates has much of a future at Everton, the club helps him get time on the pitch elsewhere, and perhaps Crewe fill a need in their academy.

I think the Henen one was due to Anderlecht over pricing him when we came in and so we did a side deal with Olympiakos for a season. So that made sense.

I agree that this makes sense for crewe if theyre skint and need a player for their u23s and perhaps also for yates if he would get some reserve games for them....

But im not sure how it benefits us if we are willing to sell ledson then surely yates could have been moved on if he cant get in any of our teams ..

Problem is Zat, in our development team there are probably 2/3 players ahead of him in his favoured position. That's not to knock the lads ability, but the fact is we're exceptionally strong in the full back area's and the defence in general to be fair. Doubt if there is an academy in England, and possibly in Europe, that has the strength in depth defensively.

This is giving James a chance to play regular football. Who knows; it may work out well for him and for us. If he performs well there will be first team opportunities he'd never get here, and he could come back to us all the better for the experience.

From another perspective, it also gives us an opportunity to sell him at the end of his contract, (perhaps giving us a degree of control over his future should he come good) rather than just release him.
