Young EFC Players Out On Loan 17-18

Unsworth tried to address the deficiencies within the squad. He brought Lennon and Mirallas into the team to bring pace into the attack. He brought Holgate into the centre of defence.

He found a team shape to accommodate Rooney, namely playing him in centre midfield with Gueye and Davies. Notably he dropped Schneiderlin.

Allardyce initially kept with that shape and obtained results in first few matches. There is no reason to suspect that Unsworth would not have kept that team shape once he found that it worked after thrashing West Ham.

Since his first five matches Allardyce has brought his own brand of magic to the team. He has played Schneiderlin and Gueye in the centre midfield which is inexplicable given the number of disastrous performances they have had earlier in the season. He has played Rooney up the pitch on occasions which has failed. He played Coleman for a full match on his first game back and no surprise that he has been injured since.

He has dropped Holgate for no apparent reason. He brings in Mangala on loan who gets injured but he doesn’t bring back Holgate. Again we now have the problem of no pace within the centre of defence.

He has had a transfer window in which he failed to bring in left back cover which was the most glaring weakness that we have. He sold Lennon but that is understandable given that he bought Walcott. He brought in Tosun at £27 million – seems to have very little pace and even he doesn’t play him. He sends Lookman and Mirallas, two of our fastest players, out on loan.

Two wins in the last 11 games tells its own story. However, none of this is his fault of course. It’s all the fault of the players. Never should we question his tactics and the way the team fail to keep hold of the ball after months of his wonderful coaching.

You could see under Unsworth there was an intention on his part to make the players pass the ball forwards and through midfield (not hoof it!) and play with pace in attack and defence. There seemed to be some thought process to make us better as a team and be competitive. Competitive and attractive that is, not utterly dour and dreadful to watch ;trying to get a 0- 0 draw at Watford is a disgrace to our club. It’s a real shame that the senior players didn’t give him a chance.

Barnsley - Joe Williams played full match in 1-1 away draw at Hull City

14 - Really well worked free-kick between Williams and Cavaré. The right-back crosses and Thiam heads over the bar.

No particular comments about his performance.

He's played over 30 games for them now this season. Really good experience for the lad. Dowell has a similar number, with Robinson not that far behind. It's been good loans for those three imo.

The likes of Browning and Connolly are perhaps touch and go, with Galloway and Pennington not so good (I include Pennington in the negative column as he's been a regular starter in most of his loans).

Well Connolly, after a slow start , has played 20 odd games for Ipswich, proved himself in a mid field position as well as the odd game at full back, so I would say it’s been a good loan for him too. I would have him ahead of Robinson in the “ will they make it with us?” stakes. At 20 he’s the type who can still kick on. At times it’s difficult to see which position he could challenge for , competition is fierce , but we don’t have a multiposition type of player like him, which makes him unique but equally may be his downfall.

My Ipswich supporting colleagues think Connolly is excellent.

Maybe not "start every week for a top 6 side" but good PL squad player. Has played right back, centre back, holding mid, box to box, left mid for them.

David Unsworth was totally out of his depth while in charge of the first team. The defeat against a really poor Southampton team was possibly the worst I have seen and even the win against West Ham happened when the new manager was sitting in the stand and there was arguably a new manager bounce in that performance.
He had left Rooney out of the team for most of the games during his time in charge and that was the only game where Rooney was played in that position.

People have such short memories. We were in deep trouble. We couldn't see where a shot on goal was going to come from, never mind a goal , never mind a win.
It was in those circumstances Sam was brought into the club, it worked in that we should be safe... but, it has gone sour very quickly for Sam who was more used to the adulation of fans desperate to stay in the premiership than the ire of fans wanting wins and good football.
I do believe there is a chance he could still be in charge next season but that chance diminishes with each passing week, each loss and each poor performance.

Realistically how many of the under 23 team that won the league last year will go on to play regular first team football at Everton ?
I don't think we can include Lookman, DCL, Holgate or Davies as they were all involved with the first team last year and hardly played with the under 23s.
So, we have Kenny and Baningime who have played in our first team this season.
I think Connolly may have a chance and Dowell as well... but I think that is probably it. I think that both have a lot still to do to play at the highest level. I think Dowell has the best chance but he has to find a level of consistency in his game which is currently not there. If Dowell wanted a role model I think it would be De Bruyne.. forget the skill, vision, strength, goals... just look at the work rate.
I think most of the lads out on loan will be finding new clubs for themselves.

That's inevitable isn't it? We have an awful lot of young players at the club. It's unrealistic for them all to get a go. I mean you haven't mention Williams in there, who would be fighting it out with Baningime and Davies for a spot just among the youngsters. Dowell is up against Lookman and Vlasic, as well as Walcott et al. Not easy.

Are you related to sam? Still peddling the line he could still keep his job.

Anyway I’m sure sam’s not bothered 6mil pay off. And then walks straight into the general manager role. In all my time on GOT that has got to be one of my ridiculous things I’ve read

...I know Connolly was part of the England Youth World Cup winning side as a LB but i wonder if he’s truly left sided. I agree with the point you make about his versatility but i’m not sure he’d be in direct competition with a conventional LB like Robinson. I’m only aware of him in recent seasons, i’m not sure what position he played in when he was younger.

What did they say Connolly's best position?
