....as I said when somebody suggested he was slow, he comes alive when the ball is played beyond him or is in the penalty box. He tends not to be competitive, competent or involved until this happens.

There were three or four occasions when he held the ball up and laid it off against Swindon, other than that quite anonymous. That one moment though, timed his run perfectly, great speed and tremendous finish.....as I said when somebody suggested he was slow, he comes alive when the ball is played beyond him or is in the penalty box. Interesting observations, but he is only twenty and still growing. Some of that physicality may come as he fills out.....yep, he certainly comes alive when the ball is played in behind the back four. He doesn’t ‘go to war’ with the opposition CBs, so they can have an easy time and he doesn’t offer a way out when his team are under the cosh.
Areas that have held him back from being involved at Everton but he’ll have a future in the game because he scores goals.
That, ability to hold the ball up, has been perhaps his biggest improvement in his time with our U23s , something they worked hard on for him to get better, u18s he just ran through and scored. He’s not like DCL at the same age who was forever wandering about harassing for the ball, but Simms is very much still a work in progress with lots to learn. He’s still not a PL striker but his improvement journey hasn’t finished yet. That goal was as good as any he’s scored , strength and pace to hold off the defender , power and technique in the shot. There were three or four occasions when he held the ball up and laid it off against Swindon, other than that quite anonymous. Do you think these skills might make him the ideal man to sit on the bench and come on with 20 minutes to go if we need a goal? If he did that he would watch a lot of DCL and it may encourage him to improve his all round game to be considered a starter or do you think he's passed that point where he could improve that side of his game?
Gibson on the bench tooBranthwaite on the bench again today. Gordon out injured and Simms starts
