Young EFC Players Out On Loan 2020-21

It strikes me that Simms loan has worked really well in Division 1 but Branthwaite, Baningame and Gordon have stuttered in the Championship.

A better strategy may be to introduce players to professional football slightly earlier and in Division 1. The main purpose of a loan is playing regularly in a professional league. Benchwarming won’t improve any of them.

....I’m not a fan of the loan system, it rarely works out for our academy youngsters. Whatever level they are at they have to earn their place. Gordon & Branthwaite looked ok when used here, so I would’ve thought a Championship loan would’ve been comfortably in their scope but they’re both struggling.

Not convinced it’s anything to do with the level they are pitched in, perhaps they are just being found out. Fingers crossed for Simms.

I never see it as a marker of the players quality if they don't have a successful loan. I'm sure they learn and develop aspects of their game, but I've watched lots of players, who have gone on to have 30+ caps for England and be regulars at CL teams, look absolutely awful at L1 and Championship level.

....it’s a fair point given Barkley struggled for regular game time when he was on loan, but I still think him & Osman are the only academy loanees who played 50 games for us.

To be fair the 2 teams they're at are just really bad with one manager already lost his job and the other probably on the verge.
Rarely a scenario where a young player on loan will thrive, even the very telented elliot doesn't seem to be doing much for Blackburn

I suppose it is why the club seem to prefer half season loans.

Im surprised it’s not going well for Branthwaite or Gordon, I expected them to do ok. The difference for them is that the loaning club have no interest in developing a player. They need instant success. I suppose the only way to change that would be to establish a long term relationship with a club, so there is something in it for them.

Unfortunately, the gap from U23 is far too big so the loan system is a necessity and we have to find a way of making it work for us. I wouldn’t be sending any players to Preston or Blackburn in a hurry, whereas Blackpool seems to have been a happy hunting ground.

Should be recalled if they aren't getting game time, defeats the purpose of them going but also makes you wonder what level our academy is at if the lads are struggling in league one or similar.

Same goes with someone like Fleetwood, who did well with Gibson last term. Maybe offer them our older under 23s who dont have a future as reward.
I have noticed the likes of City & Chelsea have started loaning there 18/19 year olds (morgan rogers, maatsen, russel, ukarque) to higher league 1 teams as opposed to finding championship team. Maybe the championship has got to important to risk young players and its a tough league to develop players in (or atleast when they are maybe 21/22 like abraham, mount, tomori, adarabayo etc).
Id like to see us try to take advantage of that higher league 1 area like we have with simms (simms i would of prefered atleast a year earlier). The likes of onyango should be looking at a full season at that level next year

Gordon is a good example of someone that probably wont make the grade for us so the target should be loans were he can play to raise his profile/value. Someone like sunderland would of been perfect for him

Agree entirely with this. The first stage is to get them prepared and experience in professional football. First and foremost they have to be playing. If that’s league 1 then so be it.

simms may be ready for a loan to the Championship next season. He has clearly grown into that loan at Blackpool and it’s done exactly what was required.

Managers at every club are fighting to keep their jobs and every point is vital to them.
We loan inexperienced young players who are learning their trade , sometimes things are expected of them they are not equipped to deliver.
Branthwaite at Blackburn started well playing alongside a more experienced defender but injuries to other players meant that Branthwaite was expected to be the main defender and could not do that yet.
I saw Gordon play one game for Preston and he motm so I don't know why that has gone sour.

It was also interesting reading about what the Blackpool assistant was saying (ex-RS Academy?) about how a loan spell is also about learning to deal with adversity - losing your form, getting a minor injury, dealing with the opposition 'working out' how you play, even experiencing a change of manager.

If you have always been a 'golden boy' in your age group and able to fight through all the age groups to get a contract it must be a big mental test to deal with professionals who are tougher, more physical and, in some cases, simply better than you.

The Tangerines have two assistant head coaches at this time. As you say Mike Garrity who worked with Critch at anfield. Also the vastly experienced ex player and manager around the divisions, Colin Calderwood.

This arrangement is working out very well indeed ;)
