Young EFC Players Out On Loan 2020-21

It strikes me that Simms loan has worked really well in Division 1 but Branthwaite, Baningame and Gordon have stuttered in the Championship.

A better strategy may be to introduce players to professional football slightly earlier and in Division 1. The main purpose of a loan is playing regularly in a professional league. Benchwarming won’t improve any of them.
Possibly, but no point loaning them out at a level that isn't going to challenge them sufficiently. Also see below.
It was also interesting reading about what the Blackpool assistant was saying (ex-RS Academy?) about how a loan spell is also about learning to deal with adversity - losing your form, getting a minor injury, dealing with the opposition 'working out' how you play, even experiencing a change of manager.

If you have always been a 'golden boy' in your age group and able to fight through all the age groups to get a contract it must be a big mental test to deal with professionals who are tougher, more physical and, in some cases, simply better than you.
Yes, this has been mentioned by myself and others several times on here, yet still the majority of people think that because a player isn't playing every week and tearing it up that the loan is a failure. As I said to BS above, there's no point making it too easy for them. They need to be challenged, and you learn more from failure than from success.

You also learn more from playing than not. Branthwaite’s loan cannot be considered a success

Gordon may get more game time, but at present, the jury is out.

Simms is getting good experience in a tough league.

If adversity were a useful learning experience, Everton would be top of the league. That is just an excuse for failure I’m afraid.

Yes, but no-ones arguing you don't. Just that it's not all/the only way you learn. We can't fully judge how good their loans have been until we get them back and see what they are like then. Success is not black and white. It may turn out that it hasn't fulfilled everything we wanted, but it doesn't mean it won't have been a useful learning process.

Last line is just rubbish. Many of the greatest minds of human history have said how much they have learnt through failure. It is not an excuse, it's how humans learn.

Branthwaites loan has failed. He is not playing. He needs game time. Adversity may develop his character, but not his skill set.

Think Ellis Simms was a funny loan out. { Blackpool } Would have had him training and travelling with the squad. Nice lad, nice family who live a stones throw from me. Potential is there for all to see BUT will he get a chance to shine?

His loan has been one of the best of the lot mate at Blackpool. He wasn't going to get a sniff in our 1st team and he's done great getting the amount of minutes he has at Blackpool.

But there's been many a time when iv'e thought Ellis or Josh King on that bench. Just hope he gets a chance of a decent run out with us. info was that the family were not happy with no chances being given to him. Thats why Carlo got him involved with the 1st team { both travelling and training } just before he was loaned out.

It's all up to him imo mate. He has to work hard, harder than he's ever worked before in his life. He's learning at Blackpool and they've even mentioned what he's weak at and what he needs to work more at but he's playing mens football which will help. Hopefully he comes back end of the season and proved his worth pre season

Agree with that and he's got a good coach at Blackpool in Critchley, who's used to working with young players from his time with the RS. I'd be happy to see more of our youngsters go there.

100% mate, has a good rep Critchley so there's definitely a lot worse clubs to go to. Simms has been given plenty of minutes, rested when required, dropped when not performing, so the loan has been absolutely fantastic from that point if view. Even better that they're challenging for promotion and he's getting the trust of the coaching staff and manager.

Wouldn't have any reservations about sending another couple of players their way if needed by them next season.

yes the only reservation I'd have would be if they get promotion and start to struggle in the Championship. Much harder to develop young players in a struggling team, with the manager under more pressure to get results.
