I wouldn't necessarily mind two defensive midfielders if it was doing any good, like it did when Barry and Jimmy Mac were doing it so well during Bobby's first season.

Ten goals conceded in the last ten days however suggests it is not
Two defensive midfielders only work when there is pace up top and one of them can push up and offer an attacking threat.
We have no pace ( we have but don't use it ) and Gana and Morgan offer no attacking threat.
If we play 2 defensive midfielders I'd like to see Mirallas, Siggy ,Sandro / lookman play behind Rooney /DCL with Bolassie replacing Mirallas when he's fit.

Fully fit squad
Pickford
Coleman, Keane, Funes Mori , Baines

Schnederlin Gana

Sandro. Siggy. Bolassie.

DCL / Rooney / Jan signing

Now
Pickford
Holgate
Keane
Williams
Baines

Gana
Schnederlin

Sandro
Siggy
Mirallas

Rooney

I've no idea how a team can sign over 10 players and look so utterly short of quality in defence at both centre backs and full backs, wingers, and up front. It's unreal it really is. Most balanced team as far as I can see is;

Pickford
Martina Keane Jagielka Baines
Gana Davies
Rooney Gylfi Lookman
DCL

Swap Davies for Morgan in harder games and on the left it's worth giving Lookman or Vlasic a go for their pace. Give the young lads time.

That's nowhere near as strong as a team that's spent £150m should be.

Gueye Davies
Sigurdsson
Vlasic Sandro
Rooney

Rooney stays upfront. If he does go back somebody/anybody sticks up front.

Gueye and Schnides are further away than 5 yards from the defence when defending.

Both understand that they need to move the team up the pitch. Both understand that if one goes forward the other stays back. But don't stand in a line when we have the ball!

Vlasic, Sandro and Rooney are capable of holding on to the ball. If they can develop a bit of game intelligence so that in tough games if it is on they go for it but, if not, at least between them they work so that they do not lose the ball straight away.

Everytime Martina gets the ball in the opposition half front three to bust a gut to get into the box. If not Martina's pointless. Once we hopefully get some results play Kenny.

Work on set pieces.

Give Willliams a kick up the backside and passing lessons.

Even if we're winning bring on Mirallas/Lookaman/Lennon half way through second half. we can't defend leads.

Grow a pair.

We've just played the top teams in the league and rather than have a go we've been timid in the hope that we wouldn't lose too badly and lose confidence.

Who else to play wide?
Davies likes to cut in from wide and I think would be very effective wider. Also he can defend.

We've got 4 wingers capable of playing either flank in Mirallas, Lennon, Lookman and Vlasic.

And if it absolutely came to it then I'd rather put Rooney on the right like Barkley was used last season.
