If he had a half decent agent, he would’ve made sure there was a release clause in that last contract. It would’ve been about £55m and this saga would have been wrapped up a long time ago.

They really aren't necessary and are in fact counter productive. You have to be reasonable with your players and most of the time these things are agreed in private. I'm sure we probably did similar with Stones, Gueye etc. But there was nothing contractual.
Say palace had stuck a 65m clause in his contract and he'd scored 25 goals last season, his market value would have been over 100m and essentially you've contractually deflated the value of your asset.
