Well we didn't bid no but I think it's fair to say there was an interest and I'm not sure we could convince either to come.

I've seen Neres quoted at £55 million pounds, and there is also every chance Brands feels for an additional £15 million he gets a player who have proven himself in the league. Lots of possibilities. I sense we didn't land our primary targets though and Zaha was a secondary choice.

Neres said at Copa he wanted to stay at Ajax and signed a deal until 2023 yesterday. Be surprising if Brands wasn't completely across that, given his years in the Eredivisie.

Why would it matter to Palace whether the buying side played in Europe? Makes no sense. All they'd care about is the money, not the future prospect of the player. It's a business.
Because we want to keep him. Fewer clubs in the CL, fewer potential purchasers.

The fact is we don't know what was said. I have heard (recently) that we agreed that he was told that we wouldn't stand in his way if a club in the CL came in for him with appropriate bid. Wilf is well liked by everyone at the club, has been an excellent professional who has worked hard to improve since he came to us when he was 8.
Plus he's a Sarf Lunnen boy, one of our own.
I'm genuinely torn because he deserves to win things and sadly that's more likely elsewhere.
But, agreed, if the goal posts have been moved, we have been less than honourable.

I think what we have here is the old adage of a verbal contract not being worth the paper it's written on. I have little doubt verbal guarantees were given, but what constitutes a reasonable offer? And in truth, if a club get a bit desperate, or owners change tact, or a manager changes his view etc then keeping your word becomes a lot less of a priority.

Zaha has been naive and should never have signed the contract without a release clause (and stipulations around it) had he been so keen to move on.
