Undoubtedly this was the single biggest own goal. No player is going to give his all for a manager or try to learn the new manager's systems and ideas - what's the point, they were thinking. He'll be gone in a few weeks ... they [the fans] already hate him. It so obviously undermined Benitez from the beginning.
The major critics of Benitez will not recognise this though. That yes, their over the top actions, contributed to the malaise that the club is in this season. It won't be the reason we go down, but they were a giant wrecking ball. Indeed it likely also had the consequence of making Benitez and his staff think 'why should we bother giving our all?' Do these fans realise how poisonous they were to the running of the club? A genuine question to any of them. Do they think they have any blame at all in this?

We were sinking at the end of Ancelottis rein though, that imo where all this mess started, it wasn’t great before Benitez came.

The fact Ancelotti could get us in the position we were in with this squad was a miracle in itself, it was only natural it would start to drop off from those performances.

The point is that you can make a poor note team play well in a short space of time with good management in place. Even Norwich play better football than us at times.
You can’t always keep blaming the players and saying it’s not good enough sometimes it’s the tactics and the training that is not good enough.

Spending money didn’t work for us. He has now transformed that Newcastle side under worse circumstances than us
Those last 6 games you mentioned are
Wolves - battered by them in possession and we lost at home
Newcastle - battered by them in possession and scored a last minute winner against the run of play and with 10 men
West Ham- an error strewn performance with another away defeat
Burnley - a must not lose game we lost after leading 2-1 at half time
Man Utd - battered by them in possession and scored a lucky deflected goal
Leicester - battered by them in possession and scored a last minute equaliser
4 of those 6 games we were outplayed and the two other games we weren’t outplayed in we lost because of mistakes
Hardly convincing displays at the moment. Our luck will run out at some point. We need to start actually putting in performances.

That analysis is a massive stretch of the imagination.
The fact is that from being 20th under Benitez in the form table were now 11th under Lampard.
Thats undisputable.
The evidence points to if Lampard had had the same amount of time as Howe + £100mil he'd have us further up the table.

I’d go so far as to say we have largely wasted a fortune, as opposed to spent a fortune. Wasted on some very poor players, various agents and of course Joorabchian, and paying off the merry go round of failed managerial appointments.
Where we are now are is all the chickens coming home to roost as a result of poor recruitment by different failed regimes with different playing styles. All that is going to take some amount of sorting out!
