I put in a bid for a house a few weeks ago for £400k, but I 'should've' bid £150k because that's what I'd prefer to pay, regardless of what the market says.

Its not just Everton, it's every club being hit hard with transfers. The money a player is bought for no longer represents their true ability. It is utter madness like you say but it's across the whole board.
