£40m Bid Made For Sigurdsson

People keep saying this, and keep calling Martinez a fraud, etc...

The fact is, we were working within very tight financial set up, which is why Martinez was picked and why Moyes left in the 1st place. They were both there to contend with a minimum spend. It influenced the managers we would look to appoint, and also the signings they would have to make.

Comparing him to Koeman isn't really fair, because had we not got Moshiri buying in, offering more money and backing the manager in an acceptable way, then Koeman wouldn't have looked twice at us.

Martinez started well and couldn't maintain as the bulk of the squad he inherited from Moyes continued to reach their inevitable decline, and the cheap/free players Martinez was able to sign was the market we were shopping in.

I know it's cool to hate now, and those who shout loudest on here and twitter tend to be negative about everything, but it was a different time.

Robles, Kone, Alcaraz, Mccarthy, Barry, McGeady, Etoo, Besic, Deulofeu, Mori and Cleverly were signed for less than the amount we sold Fellini, Anichebe and Jelavic for.

The 2 outliers being Lukaku, a wise investment that delivered goals and a massive sell on, and Niasse, which was admittedly desperate and an unmitigated disaster. These things happen.

But the most important point is, he failed to improve and it cost him his job. So why the continued bitterness? I just don't understand why people have to keep sticking the knife in. You criticise Davek for comparing, but the amount of others who continue to bring him up is ridiculous.

Move on. It's over.

not the place for a martinez discussion by any means and it is a tired and boring debate now, especially in these positive times. But to touch on something you said there.

I have highlighted the players who were clearly not good enough for us there. Add in besic being massively injury prone, Barry being past his best, Mori (who i like) not being the best defender, it does not do anything but be a detriment to the point you were making. the fact is, we could have gone to League 1 and signed 100 players for less than we sold those players for. It doesn't make them good signings for the club, the fact that so many of Martinez's signings have been sold/released in the past 12 months alone, McCarthy being another potential, besic probably be released or let go at the end of the contract, Eto'o not wanting to stay, Mori probably would have left if not injured, it means pretty much all but one player Martinez signed for us essentially were average signings either literally or in the eyes of our new manager.

He's brought up because Davek bring him up as some sort of strange barometer for success because he got 72 points with Moyes players. Most sane people know he was a disaster.

Sigurdsson needs to get wrapped up soon and a striker needs in almost sooner. Being patient is fine, but this team isn't better than last years yet and needs to win this week.

It absolutely is.

it really is in the interest of everyone now to get this done. The longer Swansea hold out the less time they'll have to spend their money. The longer we wait to bring the player in the more time he'll need to get match fit.

This is untrue. People who criticised Coco is not due to bitterness. Why should we? He is a failure. I recalled those responses are the reflection on Coco's disciples who continued to bang on their football god's holy grail (the obvious points get away card).

Coco had a positive net spend of around £16m per season. He had less constraints in terms of finance than Moyes. Moyes worked under a tighter budget yet he transformed this club from relegation battler to a PL top 7 side during his tenure. Moyes had less cash and budget but he could maintain the standard here while you have witnessed a total downfall in 2014. RM bought in loads of tosh (except Lukaku and Barry) with fair amount of cash and since those are/were not good enough, it takes time to bring new players in and get rid of the deadwood at the sametime. In this case, Koeman has to buy Siguardsson to rebuild this team.

With the money spent (especially if we spend £45/50m on Sigurdsson, and whatever we spend on another striker as well if we bring one in) we need to be at least challenging for a top 4 spot and not finishing 15 pts behind the 4th placed team like last season.

I agree with your argument on not finishing 15 pts behind the 4th placed team like last season. We have to close the gap and should look for finishing 5th-6th this season. This will be a progress in the league. A top 4 spot? It's pretty hard. Chelsea, Citch and Man United outspending us at least. Then you have the other 3 and we need one or two of them to slip up to stand a chance.

To sum up, anything lower than 7th is unacceptable.
