“The Negativity From The Fans Doesn’t Affect The Players”

Good points but I do think people tend to be a lot more harsh on social media than they would be to someone's face.
There's definitely a line that you can't cross. If people say they hope you die, are racist, bring family into it etc then yeah that's all completely out of order. When people are just saying you're rubbish etc though, I do think you just have to have a thicker skin if you want to have a career in the public eye. I don't know if you've ever worked in a call centre but I have and it was honestly a daily occurrence for people to get very, very, nasty and make you feel as small as possible. I very much doubt there's much being said on social media that isn't being said to those people.

He’s getting paid enough in a pr centric sport to be able to ignore what bigbadjeff and his mrs bigredjane post about him on Twitter.

There again with the money, a persons wealth should not be affect how they treat abusive messages.

If that person enjoys social media, as in a way to connect with people, etc. then why should they be forced off because of abusive disgusting comments.

I think mental health does come into, you will get millionaires with exactly the same mental health problems as somebody earning minimum wage. Yes, anxiety about how the next bill is paid, etc. is not there but confidence issues, anxiety about being liked, being in public places, depression are all still visible in the wealthy.

If somebody wishes physical harm then that could easily exacerbate any underlying issues where they become reclusive and wary of being out in public, now imagine that person having to perform to the highest standards in a stadium with 10's of thousands of people. If you are a fan of a club then constructive criticism should be welcomed. We don't really know what was said to Bernard for him to say this but I assume it was not nice and done anonymously and cowardly.

I have seen people in call centres (a popular example on this thread) basically tell customers on the phone to do one in no uncertain language. I was strong enough on the phones to not let it affect me and argue back sometimes but I have seen enough people cry after a call, etc. to know that any abuse to anyone is not on, just because they are playing in a pubic arena and earning more money does not mean they would not react in the same ways, and have the right to act in the same ways.

Why is it wrong to treat all people the same way, regardless of what they earn.

As a final note, I have never had a problem with the work rate of Bernard, I think he does his best and is extremely talented but just not the best fit for the Premier League, so more reasons (in my humble opinion) that personal abuse is bang out of order.

I am 100% against any form of abuse or harassment. But a fan Telling a player that he’s rubbish isn’t abuse. It’s an occupational hazard.

If comments are abusive and disgusting then that's a different thing. I was under the impression we were talking about just everyday stuff, if we're talking about people going all in then obviously the situation changes.

In response to this little bit though. They have social media accounts because their agents tell them to because it builds up brand identity and exposure and earns them...money. So yes, the money is relevant.

OK, that is a fair point regarding brand marketing on the platform. However, it still does not mean that abuse will not affect them, or it shouldn't affect them. If the agent is not looking after their mental health they need binned off, we don't know the ins and outs, I am obviously generalising. Some players will stay on because they can handle it and some players should get off.

To be honest, I thought that we were talking about all levels of abuse. My point was an extreme point, I think people get caught up in talking about the basic 'You are crap' comments but abuse comes in all forms and the reaction can be the same (to differing levels) for basic comments and the more extreme comments.

For me, either way it is cowardly to go on and say anything negative without a constructive basis. Who does it serve and if the volume is high with the simple 'You are crap' then the mental health aspect could be worse than a low volume of the minimum.

To put it into perspective, I have gone through bullying and constant abuse. Even the most minor comments can affect you, maybe not at the time it was said but they build up, it affects your confidence, it affects your ability to react with other people, it makes you paranoid. It gets you to a point where it is just too much. Just because a footballer makes more money does not, in any way, make me any less empathetic to their situation compared to somebody who is getting abuse on non working related or work related but are only in a low wage if they are receiving constant abuse.

the people who even say the most minor things are cowards and should not be given any excuse, like 'well they make money, so they should be able to handle it', again even with the less abusive comments. They do not think of what it is causing another human being.

hi guys i think after this rigorous debate we can conclude that there are many angry fans in the everton fans and they like to shout loudest and bully others who do not share their anger or hysteria because it makes them feel silly that they cannot control their own emotions nor erections. thank u for such a professional and enjoyable debate buddies.

"A very disappointing Valentine's day for angry Evertonians"

Alex Ferguson ruled Man U with an iron fist and he did alright . If you keep telling someone that is crap that they’re doing well and to keep going ... they usually stay crap.
It’s hard to imagine exactly what SAF was like behind closed doors. But I’d imagine under the tough exterior he was a good man manager with his players and had different techniques for different players.

You don’t achieve the success he did by shouting and abusing your players at every opportunity.

Social media accounts are not a necessity of life. If you are "famous" do not have one. End of problem. The only abuse you will hear then in the case of a millionaire footballer is what you get from the speccies. Apart from racial abuse, that is par for the course.
