If it's always been expensive and difficult to raise kids and we should just stop worrying about it, why are we showing sympathy towards people in this thread who are struggling to raise kids on £20k gross a year? And why are you dismissing the idea that perhaps, for people who don't yet have children, a bit of serious thinking and financial planning should inform and direct any decision to have children?

If you want to do it that way, fine. But kids aren't the exclusive right of those with a bit of money behind them. I do think you are missing the point somewhat though. We've been having kids since the dawn of man. People have generally found a way and even if you're earning £80k a year, kids will still seem expensive.

Having kids should not be an out and out financial decision. If it was you'd never have them.

If they're not drunk he has no chance, even Chrissy doesn't fancy himself.......
All he has to do is wait until they get into their 30s.

[Poor language removed] with government paid for childcare they don't even need him then.

There's a war on ugly men.

We are a pretty well grown up country who have decency and law as it's central tenets. Do not imagine that we need additional laws to protect our freedom, nor should you decry the necessary needs to ensure that we remain safe in this unstable world.....you would be the first to complain if a terrorist bomb were to go off in your town........
Some of our freedoms we unfortunately do though. Is that not the point?

I've got 4, but then again I'm loaded.........

First of all - the woman should receive enough money from the man so that her standard of living doesn't go down at least for a while

You and I both know that it doesn't always work like this in reality. There are lots of men who leave and do not provide.

So, if the man leaves the mother with a child and doesn't provide, what should the single mother do to improve her financial situation, given that it was previously a reasonable situation before the relationship broke up?

I think everyone should be forced to enter into a pre-maritial agreement with lawyers provided by the state if necessary so these problems can be argued and decided before marriage and then that should be binding.

Sounds like the only winners in this scenario are the solicitors.

Bearing in mind that legal aid has been cut drastically over the last 5 years and access to justice is at an all time low, do you really think it's practical for the government to pay contract lawyers to negotiate prenuptial agreements every time a couple get married? It would cost crazy amounts of money.

You would no doubt then complain that people shouldn't be getting married on a whim because it costs the tax payers money to pay the lawyers.

Prenups aren't worth the paper they're written on anyway. If you think about the situation you're trying to solve (woman being left to bring up a child and not having enough money), do you really think she will have the funds to bring a breach of contract claim through the courts? Or do you think that should be funded by the state as well?

There's nothing you can do to stop people having children, regardless of their financial circumstance.

I know I won't be rushing into having kids until I can give them a good standard of life but who am I to tell other people what to do with regards to this.
