2015 post UK election discussion

I agree but the problem will be the same as scotland. If everyone united behind the eu than those who generally dislike the eu which might well be 40% of the voters will flee to the ukip.

You need to make them think they have a place in the mainstream parties. We clearly didn't convince the scots that.

Sorry mate, I meant that is the discussion was deep and serious, a lot of "antis" might well be converted. A lot of them base their objection to the EU on untruths or ignorance of the benefits of it.

I am no great fan of it, but on balance, I would rather be on the train looking out, not left on the platform. If they could negotiate some of the non single market stuff away as well, even better.

At the end of the day more people voted in what they considered to be their own interests than voted in the interests of the needy in society.

This of course, is the usual way the world goes about its' interests, I'd hoped with our history of the NHS, benefits and social care we had a population that places a value on the common good.

It seems that is not the case.

Never met anyone yet who volunteered to shoot themselves in the foot!

This will be a massive issue. In terms of votes achieved the Party ranking is....

CON 36.8
LAB 30.5
UKIP 12.6
LD 7.7
SNP 4.8
GRN 3.8

But I doubt that the people who voted for the likes of UKIP will get the respect they deserve......

This truly is the crunch. Labour found themselves in an awkward position largely due to what happened in Scotland, if not for that in terms of seats and their votes they could have been proud. SNP get 4.8% and command 56 seats, some how this just does not square up compared to the UKIP and LD vote share and of course Labour. Labour got 6x the SNP vote but in terms of seats only 4x!

Our electoral system need to be reviewed.

How is helping your fellow man, fellow members of society shooting yourself in the foot?

Surely society is better and richer for looking after those less fortunate than yourself? By society being better and richer then you yourself are better off for that.

There is huge value, economic and social, in raising the lowest standards of living in society. Who can argue with that?

Assuming that I come out of uni, get a decently paid job with my degree, marry, settle down, buy a house and then look to have children - as is my hope, and at the positive end of my expectations for the next ten years - then Tory policies would benefit me. Obviously, I could be on JSA in a couple of years and all of that could fade to become a distant hope.

I still voted Labour though, because for as long as people can work very hard for extremely little reward, I will always lean towards the more socialist party.

I get your point though, especially with the amount of apathy towards the major parties, people hear a policy that they like and benefits them and then they go for it. Fair enough!

That majority is nothing. The Tories constantly divide over the EU in particular. One vote comes up that the backbenchers don't like Cameron's position on, all it'd take is 20 or so voting against the government and that's that.

Not only that, Cameron won't serve another term, so the leadership moves will begin in earnest shortly. May and Johnson will be looking to cause chaos and get another election called within the next 2-3 years while Labour are decimated.

It'd be something of a miracle for Cameron to get through this free of challenge. Take Scotland for instance - he might try and give them Devo Max; do you think every Tory in that house will let him?
That's horrendous. Not you, the wheeling and dealing of who comes next to wield the baseball bat. Johnson, May, Gove, Osborne...scurrying round a back alley like the rats they are to be next Fuhrer.

But your post Friend centred on self interest, I was just confirming that is the case in the majority of people, look after number 1. Hence my comment no one is going to be keen to hinder that self interest. Having said that there is a substantial number of people in the country who do care and it is nothing to do with Government, thankfully and I mean which ever lot would be in charge.
