Not following your logic here.
Are you implying that those in attendance in 1994 were just casual supporters or worse, tourists?
Yeah, we'll have some supporters from other countries here (should have seen the Cotton Bowl in '94 for the Brazil vs. Holland quarterfinal....entire stadium had green and yellow with several big sections of orange and white....very cool to see....great game too) but there are a lot of supporters here in the USA. MLS, EPL, La Liga, etc....
If the World Cup were to be held here again, the attendance records would be broken once again (lots of newer stadiums since '94 which hold more people too...)
I'm implying that most American World cup fans watch the world cup and little other football yes.
Like how people like me only watch the Ashes and Wimbledon and the Rugby World cup and know very little about the sports the rest of the year.
The viewing figures back me up on that.
You're a big country and a country that is into sports so on a big occassion even a minority sport like Football which isn't as popular as 'the big 4' but is still quite popular will get big crowds. I'm not arguing that.
In the same way if a basketball world cup was held in England I might go and see a few games despite knowing very little about the sport.
But if we got the baseball world cup twice in a time period where Venezuela, the USA and Cuba didn't get it once. Or if we got the Hockey world cup as many times as Russia and Canada I would start going hold on this is a nice spectacle and all but shouldn't the real fans whose countries live and breathe this stuff get it instead.
Out of the last five and the next three world cups, only 1 will be in Latin America where they've fought wars over football matches before, only 3 will be in Europe or Western Asia where you don't even ask people if they like football you ask them which team they support, 1 will be in Africa where there's a huge developing fanbase and 3 will be in countries that like football but prefer other sports.
I'm not joking when I say I'd rather see it in Ghana than Australia even though I know the ghanians would do a worse job and most Ghanians couldn't afford tickets to see the games resulting in low attendences. Because I think it'll matter more to them then to the majority of australians.
You guys getting it once, I'm okay with. Twice since it's been held in Italy, less so.
