Ok well I will have to respectfully disagree. In my opinion, players brought in are only great if brought in, in numbers and make a competitive/great team. Financial constraints due to Bill owning something he had no financial right to own saw to us spending relatively little compared to our peers (as they would have been at that time).
In no other period in Everton’s history would a manager have been given 11 years with only one solitary FA Cup final to show for it but Bill allowed it because Moyes did his best on the shoestring budget. Under Bill’s tenure there was no keeping up pace commercially with our competitors. Finally, the reason why the club persists….in 120 years of existence at the time of Bill buying the club with his mate’s money, we had won or been runners up in the main domestic cups and in Europe on 32 occasions - now THAT is competing. Since he bought us and had remained on as Chairman this has happened just ONCE in 25 years.
