Upton Park (West Ham's old ground) used to be a long intimidating walk in the 70s (especially if you were on your own).

And also Old Trafford , the walk down Warwick Rd to the train was always a bit dodgy , esp if we bt them

Maybe it's all some master plan, make it such a nightmare to get to and from that staying the night at the hotel on Nelson dock is the best most convenient choice. Early access, sup pints all day and turn in.

…the safety aspect would be the concern for me. The platforms were build with little or no traffic in mind and have not been upgraded to deal with such an influx of passengers. People being crushed or even spilling onto the track has to be a possibility looking at the pics.

Dreadful foresight from the council.

I was thinking the same myself and wondered how they would control the people. But today I met someone at the station before the game and there were loads of stewards and transport police, maybe up to around 40 from what I seen. I'm sure you know already but the also have barriers to control the crowds so I think it will be safe.
It's bang out of order that there is no roof yet though and the winters will be long and cold if you are there for a while.
I thought I read somewhere they will build a roof over the waiting area.
