30 Years Of The Premier League

I actually watched the Premier League Years 92-93 recently and it was incredible how gaudy that first season was, with cheerleaders and fireworks after every game, and Sky doing the whole "This is the ONLY place you'll see live Premier League Football!!!"

They normally focus on the football on those shows but this one had so much self reverential back slapping that it almost made me feel ill

No Sky, you don't have to brag about how you had a big firework display after Man City drew 0-0 with Sheffield United at Maine Road

It was the beginning of the Americanisation of English football and it's only gotten worse as the years have progressed

Plus, I really hate when a TV company and streaming service brags about how you can only watch the thing you're watching with them. That's not a good thing. Hiding professional football behind an expensive paywall in order to line your own pockets is not something you should be bragging about. Football was the people's game and these TV companies came along and made it into a corporate brand where the actual supporters are the least important thing

It doesn't matter how many times you show Ryan Giggs making that slaloming run against Arsenal, or that 4-3 between Liverpool and Newcastle, or even the scenes at the end of the Everton/WImbledon game. The fact you own these moments and will do so for perpetuity, and far fewer people have seen them at the time as well as since on account of you essentially holding football hostage in your cavernous video vault, is not something you should be doing a victory dance over you self satisfied sacks of Rude Word Removed
Cheer leaders great to perv on like but still hate how weve started copying america on so much stupid stuff???

gender reveal parties wtf???

It’s absolutely crap now if I’m being honest. I think quite a lot of that’s to do with society and arguably the country being crap but the sport really isn’t what it was.

I just can’t abide by cheating becoming accepted, VAR working everywhere apart from over here, buying the league becoming accepted and your club being totally insignificant if they aren’t a certain 6

Once the real big money came into game, food chain like big clubs started eating up little clubs like i lost interest. Us getting fourth in 04 and Leicester winning PL only times its really been rocked over here.

still no execuse for our failure to not win more trophies like when much smaller teams than us won em?

yes 21 years i think. Just saying hows its all gone backward in thirty years since epl was formed. But many will say weve progressed???
One of the most noticeable symptoms of the general progression is how everything now seems to be 'the best ever'.

Be it the best ever goal in the history of football (seems to happen monthly), best ever player, best ever team (ironically seems to be one that doesn't win either the league or the CL currently, but still best ever). Nothing can simply be 'good' anymore, has to be better than what has gone before.

I'm sure it's just part of the necessary marketing associated with the obscene amounts of money swirling around the upper echelons of the game now but still really telling of the fact we are now firmly in the era of sports entertainment rather than sporting competition.

Let's face it, the Man Utd team(s) of the 90s and 00s, and even the Wenger Arsenal are far superior in achievement to anything since, barring possibly the Man City treble team, but that is an inconvenient truth so is completely glossed over.

Yes they dont factor how games changed to years ago. Balls heavier, Pitches were harder to play on, game was physical whilst now its near enough no contact fairy game???

Oh and we had replays in cup competitions. Yer werent just allowed to get lucky in penalty shoot outs?

Sure players look after themselves better nowadays eat better. But that stil dont equate to gamw being better to years ago

was probably better when players got bladder ed together. Fan deffo got more commitment???

Good old days. Orange slices and a capstan full strength at half time.?

Those stats show high dominant Man United have been in the modern era, they jumped from having seven titles to twenty titles.

Of course it was only five years, since our most recent league title back in 1992. I don't think anyone thought in 1992, that thirty years later we'd still be stuck on 9 league titles!
Nor would they have foreseen the introduction and domination of the likes of Chelsea City, with their Russian oligarch's and a Middle Eastern state's money.

However, let's not ignore the biggest shock - Liverpool on only one more title after the domination of the 70s and 80s.

Funny reading about cheating being a new thing, some of the dives on those old Big Match Revisited are a farce and yet, as there was a sense of British fair play, they're hardly ever disputed "a definite penalty there" says Brian Moore after the most obvious dive of the year (Francis Lee, Steve Heighway etc). In fact, the first songs I remember from attending the match, as a 6 yr old in 78-79 was 'youre gonna get your ****** head kick in" and "theres only one team of divers".

Even now there's an old Man Utd vs Spurs game on ITV4 and Utd have been given a ridiculous penalty..for next to nothing....no discussion at the end at how bad it was, just the fact that Coppell took it and not Stapleton. The terribel decision is just accepted with no argument. If the same that had happened to an English team in the European Cup, there'd be uproar and claims of a fix etc.
