30 Years Of The Premier League

One of the most noticeable symptoms of the general progression is how everything now seems to be 'the best ever'.

Be it the best ever goal in the history of football (seems to happen monthly), best ever player, best ever team (ironically seems to be one that doesn't win either the league or the CL currently, but still best ever). Nothing can simply be 'good' anymore, has to be better than what has gone before.

I'm sure it's just part of the necessary marketing associated with the obscene amounts of money swirling around the upper echelons of the game now but still really telling of the fact we are now firmly in the era of sports entertainment rather than sporting competition.
True but its hardly a new thing and the same in most sports "Is Ali the best ever" articles appeared in Ring and Boxing News in the 60s, "yes" says young sports writer, "no" says some 110 year old trainer who worked with Jim Jeffries etc. No harm in that, just a bit of debate

Nor would they have foreseen the introduction and domination of the likes of Chelsea City, with their Russian oligarch's and a Middle Eastern state's money.

However, let's not ignore the biggest shock - Liverpool on only one more title after the domination of the 70s and 80s.
The demise of the rs as a superpower, has been one positive from the premier league era alright. Sir Alex Ferguson and Manchester United, sure did put that shower in their place good and proper.:D

It’s absolutely crap now if I’m being honest. I think quite a lot of that’s to do with society and arguably the country being crap but the sport really isn’t what it was.

I just can’t abide by cheating becoming accepted, VAR working everywhere apart from over here, buying the league becoming accepted and your club being totally insignificant if they aren’t a certain 6
The top three in 1991/1992 was 1 Leeds United 2 Manchester United and 3 Sheffield Wednesday.

Leeds and the Owls are now an irrelevance. Wednesday have been gone out of the top flight for twenty two years now, and Leeds were out of it for sixteen years.

I don't think anyone could have foreseen that happening thirty years ago.

Wednesday were also one of the original break away 10 if I recall correctly (pre Prem, the "big" 5 and the "little" 5, in the late 80s , considered a league of just 10, rather than 20).

Once the real big money came into game, food chain like big clubs started eating up little clubs like i lost interest. Us getting fourth in 04 and Leicester winning PL only times its really been rocked over here.

still no execuse for our failure to not win more trophies like when much smaller teams than us won em?
Since 1987 we've had that FA Cup win in 1994/1995, that fourth place finish in 2004/2005, and that 72 point season under Roberto Martinez in 2013/2014.

Other than that it's been pretty meh. Everton since 1987 are kind of like Coventry City when they were in the top flight. We're there but we just don't really do anything of any relevance.

I’ve said it for a long time, we’re the most insignificant team in the league. Until recently we’ve just existed sitting about 8th-13th in the table with very rare cup runs never doing the unexpected and boring the pants off everyone.

A big reason the media only concentrate on the negative and mental decisions we make is the fact we never surprise anybody and are of little to no entertainment value.

Weirdly this season was far more interesting than anything we’ve had in a while.

The disgusting amounts of money it has brought in has completely ruined the game and you even get players who would rather sit on their arses than play because of it.

genuinely think the standard of players has gone down the toilet, yes they're much better athletes but actually worse players, the flair and creativity has reduced significantly despite defenders being told not to tackle.

I don't like the way the premier league has almost killed my love for the sport.

The standard Everton season in the modern era consists of no derby wins, no wins at Old Trafford, the Emirates and Stamford Bridge, and out of both cup competitions by the end of January.

The season we just had was interesting alright, but it would be nice to have an interesting season for all the right reasons at this stage!

True...but the fans in the run in this season were amazing and the best atmosphere at home league games for years.

They had far more time and space to be creative though, I was watching an old game earlier on ITV4 (Utd Vs Spurs) and Hoddle/Wikins wouldnt be afforded that space these days, the games a lot faster. Although I think dribbling is far less commonplace, which is a shame as its always s been the thing I've liked most football.

Of course i meant to say how dominant there.

Anyway here is some footage of our first ever Premier League game, it was a 1-1 draw against Sheffield Wednesday at Goodison. Barry Horne scored our first ever Premier League goal.

The poor Owls of course in later years, would fall even further down the mountain than Everton.

Owls had a boss side that season. Mad to see where they are now.
I think Keown was seen as bit of an odd bod, by his playing colleagues. He seems to like Arsenal more than he does Everton as well.
Pat Nevin was on Joe Cole's podcast recently and talked a bit about his time at Everton. Apparently he was seen as a bit of outsider by the rest of the squad and they nicknamed him "Bob" as an acronym for Brains of Britain. Nevin was saying he was a bit more bookish than the usual footballer and it invited a bit of ridicule. Nevin also said that Sheedy and Keown came to blows once in training. And he said that usually fisticuffs in training release a lot of tension and spirit gets better afterwards, but absolutely not in this case lol

Back when i was a naive teenager, this promo vid and song got me hook line and sinker into the upcoming brand shiny new premier league, and I thought it was going to be amazing - if I only knew then what I know now…..
