30 Years Of The Premier League

Preston were the 1st Leeds were the last.

110 years were integrity was was mainly upheld and fairness broadly achievable. Don't get me wrong, Sky was a sympton not the disease, but it accelerated the decline
Sorry but that is a load of sentimental nonsense. I am no fan of Sky or how the modern game is being stolen from the working man. However, to suggest football existed in some magical fairyland where all was well and just is just complete nonsense. Football has always been corrupt and people have always been people.

Mad that City will probably catch up our title haul next season and inevitably overtake it within the next 3 years comfortably. Quite sad really. 6 titles in a decade for them is a pretty wild state of affairs and says a lot about the state of football.
Liverpool did it in the 70s, utd in the 90s/2000s or even Arsenal in the 30s. What does that say?

As far as i'm aware, we didn't have Saudi terrorist's owning football clubs in the pre premier league era.

You seemed to imply that football was as corrupt back then as it is now. Football was a lot fairer and more competitive in the pre premier league era imo.

Back then clubs like Nottingham Forest and Derby County could win the league. It wasn't the closed shop that it is now.

Yes, and Everton are in large part to blame. It was they along with the other "big" clubs who pushed for the Premier league so they could have a larger slice of the pie. Clubs like Forrest had no chance after that. What they didn't bank on, buy should have expected(and I don't just mean Everton here) is that as soon as all that extra cash was floating around, bigger sharks than them would come along and gobble it all up. They are reaping what they sowed. No surprise to see it was almost the same clubs who tried to form a breakaway from the one they already created.

I said in the first post on this thread, that Sir Phillip Carter was one of the main driving forces behind the forming of the premier league.

So there is a sad irony to that, considering Evertons demise during the premier league era.

Mind you Everton were on the slide for a few years prior to that, but once the new premier league started up, we fell even further off the pace.

I’ve said it for a long time, we’re the most insignificant team in the league. Until recently we’ve just existed sitting about 8th-13th in the table with very rare cup runs never doing the unexpected and boring the pants off everyone.

A big reason the media only concentrate on the negative and mental decisions we make is the fact we never surprise anybody and are of little to no entertainment value.

Weirdly this season was far more interesting than anything we’ve had in a while.
Interesting for the wrong reasons .

And yet history would seem to suggest other wise. Also, next time read my entire post. You'll see that I pretty much said the same.

I also never said anything about a magical fairyland. That's your own strawman you're trying to take down

That only one of them happened outside the Prem era. Which actually casts a bit of suspicion on what Liverpool did in the 70's if you ask me. Especially now it's an open secret they are currently doping up their players using a loophole.

I'm not sure you can count Arsenal in the 30's. Once that golden generation was gone, so was Arsenal's success. Nowadays clubs spend an obscene amount of money ensuring they stay in a golden era. Hoovering up all the best players from around the world. Football is completely different, and money carries much of the blame

Just my opinion like.

They did it in the 80s too. People just dislike dominance when money is more involved (even though the iikes of Liverpool and Utd had far more clout in the market back then the likes of Ipswich and Villa) and the idea that just them might be doping is hardly realistic, PED use likely goes on with many top athletes and football has had these rumours for years (which are always brushed under the carpet)

True, but you're taking about over 40 years ago now....and any decline is only a personal view- it certainly isn't in decline in term of bums on seats and the qualiity of players on view.

The worst thing for me is that there is no level playing field any more. In the olden days a bit of shrewd transfer business and good management could win you trophies but that is not the case any more

Whilst it might not just be Liverpool, they've definitely found a way to make it give them an edge over everyone else. They have a way of turning even average players into great ones. And the players always burn out and go on a downward trajectory when they leave. It's more than a coincidence now.

Anyway, we're skirting off topic. I'll leave the Liverpool chat for the other thread.

Certain teams definitely started having more clout. But that was due more to the media than money. As I said, Sky was a symptom that sped up the decline, not the cause.
