Spot-on, but you forgot Leeds.

Yes, Leeds had won the league, as had Blackburn, but neither had won the Cup as well. In 1997, only us, Liverpool, Arsenal and United had won both in the previous 10 years. In fact, you would have had to go back to the previous 25 years for it to become 5 teams, with Leeds rightly being the 5th.

We have form for that. Didn't we do something similar to Ipswich, I think it was, in 1985 or 86? Of course, if a team puts themselves at the mercy of others it is their own fault really. But Vialli owed us nothing and, as you say, thought that the integrity of the league was worth playing for. How lucky for us that he was the Chelsea manager on that day. His own fans were baying for a Bolton goal but he defied them. A winner.

Was also the smart thing for him to do. As a young manager, why would you want to make enemies when all you've got to do to avoid that, is try and win the game?

In regards to previous posts, what about Bolton and Blackburn? They've both got all time top flight records of 3,500+ points.

Yeah. I didn't include Blackburn because they've never been a big club. Leeds however, whilst not as big a club as the others you mentioned, were a much bigger club than Chelsea- and they had a dislike of each other.

I'm totally agreeing with your assessment of Chelsea's resentment of bigger clubs at that time; just think Leeds should be included in the list.

People forget how tiny a club Chelsea were. My uncle (Cockney rogue from the southern branch of the family that he is) has been a season ticket holder at 'the Bridge' since the 70s I think. His tales used to just sound awful - abuse, crews and 'tear-ups' against other tiny opposition. In fact he got arrested for thumping an undercover copper at a 'tear-up' against Millwall - the bell
