If we stay up, can the lowest scoring team in the league, afford to lose their only central midfielder who could realistically score more than 5 goals in a season?

He’s not perfect but we’re in this position because we let all our goal scorers, who also had flaws, leave and replaced them with players who couldn’t hope to match their output.

Maybe in an ideal world we’d move him on and replace with a better footballer with similar goal threat… reality is we’ve no cash and are unlikely to do that so should keep him. Why would the club not at least trigger the one year option on him.

Ignore all that, mate. He sat on the ball at HT v City, we need to get rid of him.

At this point, we need to hit the extension in his contract unless hes on absolute wild money

He is one of the bigger earners tbf, which (if things are in a dramatic place re finances) could be the reason Doucoure is hinting that a new deal is a problem

In that case, we shouldnt even consider extending his contract until we know which league we will play in next season.

He is on seriously high wages, though he can certainly say he's earned them fair and square since Dyche came in.
It's a question of how Dyche would want to set us up next season, assuming we stay up.
By all accounts he'll want to move to a more traditional 442, so so the question is which of the current midfielders are retained.
Honestly I can see us cashing in on Onana immediately for a big profit, so that alone could maybe financially justify triggering a one-year extension.

It’s a fair point, he’s only worth keeping if Dyche is going to stick with the 451.

Doucoure is a strange one to pin down for me.

He's at his best as a marauding box to box that has license to join attacks and get into the box. He's not a great finisher, but he puts himself into great positions and seems to will the ball into the net at times.

He has an engine.

However, he is a travesty whenever we have possession, perhaps the worst midfielder we have, including Gana, with the ball at his feet. Horrendous passer.

He's the type of guy that should be playing when we expect to counter, like last night. However, he is a major liability, in my opinion, in a side that is expected to have possession.

Reason right there why Lampard wasn't a fan. He's tailor made for Sean Dyche

And that is probably where we are at sadly. You are right he prob is more a sean dyche player. Im not sure thats anything to celebrate though. Im gona put it all on hold as everything right now is about staying up.
The longer term issue of having a player or players who struggle to weight a pass or control it will come up again. But we might have already gave them a bumper contract by then.
Everton making the same mistakes over and over again.
