I think of this in the same way as the iwobi contract extension. Where else are they going to go? Assuming it's Palace or Fulham type options, pay those wages. Not the Brewsters Millions contracts Moshiri has been handing out.

Makes sense. Improvement at the position would require either a long-term commitment or a loan fee that drives up the total cost. It's a large wage to extend, to be sure, but he's been reasonably durable and has chipped in some goals and assists every season.

Seems like the wrong place to pinch pennies when we can get some level of production and we know what we're getting. Other positions are higher priority upgrades.

The club must be worried that someone else is going to try to pay him £100k a week to fight footballs before half-six on Sunday.

I get the one year deal makes sense.
It's say 100k a week for a year. That 5.2m for a decently effective known quantity.
Signing a replacement and then paying wages would be at least 4 times that. Probably 6+ times.
So we keep him and look to fix the major needs first.
Strikers, fullbacks, players with pace.

Wonder what sort of wage they offered him for his years extension? He on 120 a week now, surely they not offered the same
If you’re his agent the extension year maybe more, because this is on Everton wanting him. As an agent you’d be like 100k a week for 3yrs and if you want him for the 4th it’s 150.

This is an extension that was agreed when he signed - the club stipulated that they would like the option to either extend the deal by a year or allow his contract to expire at the end of this season. There isn't likely to have been any negotiation or change in wages, the club will have gone through the proper channels (ie his agent) to inform the player that they were exercising their right to extend the contact on it's pre-agreed terms.
