I know in the Championship there is usually negotiations on wage if a player gets an extension, especially if the player is at the end of their career. The Agent probably knows the player not going to get the same wage anywhere else, I know for example at West Brom we gave Jake Livermore last season a years extension and he dropped from 24 grand to 16, his Agent probably excepted that now teams in the lower leagues would match 16 grand a week. This is an extension that was agreed when he signed - the club stipulated that they would like the option to either extend the deal by a year or allow his contract to expire at the end of this season. There isn't likely to have been any negotiation or change in wages, the club will have gone through the proper channels (ie his agent) to inform the player that they were exercising their right to extend the contact on it's pre-agreed terms.
Yeah I’ve come round to this way of thinking, even if we do go down. 5m is very high in wage terms but a small amount compared to replacement cost. Doucoure isn’t brilliant but if you pay 4m for a player and pay them 1m you will save no money in year one and likely get a much worse player.Sensible extension.
We save having to pay a fee to replace him and can put any funds towards low quanitity, high quality.
Now that we're extending his contract, I'd like to remind people of this accurate description of our boy Doucs. His feet and legs treat the football like a cloud of angry wasps surrounding a dog turd covered in asbestos

Don't need em here, you're 100000000% spot onThe vaults shall judgeth
He’s crap and I wouldn’t have bought him in the first place. He’s not getting a 4yr deal. I was. Talking about the the extra year option on his original deal when we signed himBrother, he is 30, there's no way anyone offers him a potential 4 year contract.
Except us, as we're braindead and can't negotiate, obviously.
So much hate for Doucoure but I’ve had a look at the numbers:
Barely played under Lampard: 15 points from 20 games, joint bottom of the table.
Dyche brings him in: 12 points from 9 games up to and including Spurs.
Suspended (admittedly stupidly): 1 point from 3 games.
Comes back in: 5 points from 5 games.
Is he brilliant, no. Are the results even with him good enough, no. But the comparison suggests he’s more part of the solution than the problem.
Oh he starts for us every time. But then, being five-foot-and-a-fist makes one a king among dwarfs. So much hate for Doucoure but I’ve had a look at the numbers:
