Questionable judge of a footballer, nobody in their right mind gives Doucoure a new contract.

We just split the difference really, that’s the beauty of opinion, like I think your judgement on both players you mention, is Ill judged and naïve.

But ultimately irrelvent.

Selling Gordon was stupid and the events leading up to the sale were shameful, he wanted gone and that will be the spin, but I don’t really blame him, we did sweet FA to improve after selling him, so stupid to sell him. Doucoure has been one of the few who been at it, in the games he played while here, I’ll pick and back a lad with heart and care, who can influence results - every time. 6 out of 9 is indicative, ultimately results and impact are the bottom line.

Back when Ancelotti was here I was convinced that the Doucoure injury was key to our form dropping off a cliff - correlation and causation.

Then for the initial period under Benitez he was also a bit of a match winner.

Then he was rubbish for ages, especially under Lampard - I can understand the criticism but he hasn't been quite as bad as some make out - there's been flashes of a very good player.

He's shown it twice in 18 months.

The squad has to many fires to put out, with limited resources in the summer to not be activating his extention.

The priotrity has to be a couple of full backs, Forward wide forwards and a playmaker.

In the engine room, Idrissa will be touching 34, Onana - you’d be amazed if we’re not fielding bids in the summer. Davies will go.You’d hope Garner might step up for that squad spot. Then we have Gbamin, Gomes and Dele - who we will likely try and shift, but we won’t shift them all.

Do we really want to have to recruit a mini new midfield rebuild with so many other priorities, a one year extension, assists our finances, provides depth and enables other priorities and gives us a bit of breathing space.

Regardless of manager, tactics or who else is in the lineup with him though, how has he ended up so incredibly crap/awkward/dumb when receiving the ball, moving with the ball and passing the ball?

I don't think I'd ever watched him before he joined but I have to presume he can't have reached the premier League with the level he he has shown for us when on the ball

I will admit that we are at such a low level, his sprinting around the pitch does make him look like he is having a positive impact, and maybe he is....but I doubt it tbh

He’s not a possession based player mate, he’s a water carrier and you need those, he enables the shape, he has presence and he’s an athlete he enables those around him and he can break a line. He’s never going to be spreading 40 yard passes it’s not his game and I’d prefer him not to, play it simple - don’t loose possession and he rarely does, but he keeps it ticking, he’s a pass and move man.

You look at his return from injury in the relegation run last year, we picked up results, you look at us since he came back in this season our results have improved, you look at us being near the top of the table at Xmas under Carlo then form falling off a cliff with him being injured - you can see the trend, he really impacts us and our results, you look at the drop of form under Benitez coincides with a Doucoure injury, again Lampard death spiralled with results with him out of the team - there is a evidential trend. I laugh when I read comments like he’s had two good games in three years based on my last sentence. Head scratching really.

But there's no immediate rush to activate Doucoure's extension. He can't go anywhere and no club can come in for him right now.

Which, btw, i believe comes with a hefty bonus fee and he's already on big wages. He's also 30.

I'm not saying don't do it, but we would be stupid to do it now. He has to keep up some form and hopefully that helps us stay in the league.

We might not be in the division, mate.

Id agree mate, be stupid to hand out any extension right now given our position. We’ve worse sinners on the wage bill though. But if and when a decision may need to made and we are in the PL Id activate.

He may well have something lined up already, maybe Dyche needs to make him feel wanted again and have that word with him - if he does want him, which I suspect he would . He already said he’d like to stay here, though that was last summer.

No I don't mean be the playmaker, spray passes around or whatever. I'm not talking about expecting him to do things his role, whatever it is, does not really require.

I mean basic control, movement with the ball and passing is so consistently poor that I can't fathom how he has gotten so bad

and don't get me wrong. We are utter crap so I expect our players to not be very good more often than not. I'm just commenting on how he particularly stands out amongst a crap squad in those particular parts of his game
