2024/25 Abdoulaye Doucoure

I can't believe the level of disrespect on here for a guy who always works like a dog for the blue shirt. If a match finished 3-0 to us, with Doucoure having a goal and two assists, lots of posters would still be moaning about the instances where he miscontrolled the ball or misplaced a pass. I'm not saying he should be a long term first teamer, but what about some respect, please, for a 100% trier and regular contributor to good results?

I wonder if we will start to look into our youth setup a bit more next season and bed them into the first team. The team should theoretically be safe and in a much more comfortable place. Fill out the roster with who we can get and round it out with the brightest from the academy. Depth is a very good thing to have, but it isn't possible to turn it into City in one night and we need to try and encourage youth players to take the next step. I feel like we have neglected it a bit too much and having depth for the sake of it isn't always a good thing considering the financial impact it has.

I am owed personal damages for the length of his tenure here

It will be interesting. I personally think we will spend big in the summer(for us, lets say 100m+), but that we will ALSO pair that with investing in a lot of youth players. We will buy to immediately compete, but like you suggested long term they will focus on more academy products and developing players. With our currently small squad can easily buy 6-7 players and still have spots for a couple youth players to fill squad roles.

Love when this randomly pops up every season or so.

We would lean on the youth if we had the players - we don’t.

Almost any real prospect has left the club early in the last 5 years or so. Armstrong is probably our closest currently but we aren’t a City or Chelsea with players just languishing with bags of talent. We have probably got two players in total on our books as youngsters who could make it as first team premier league players. And that’s at a MASSIVE push.

I think an overhaul of the youth teams is what Thelwell was actually having some success with funnily enough, hopefully that continues.

I would like us to move on from players like this but I can see why some would want him to stay considering how many potential departures in the summer.
That's the thing. Ideally Alcaraz is settled as the 10 and we could bring in someone to share that load next season. But then you add in adding another 8 players, fighting for targets and whether they can settle, and Doucoure on a greatly reduced rate doesnt seem a terrible idea

I think you missed the point. We can only sign so many players and you don't want to sign mediocore players to bad contracts. You get what you can and fill the roster out. There is way too much cynicism towards the academy. At some point you need to have a sustainable system where you can prop players up to the squad and for sale.

I agree entirely with what you’re saying, but if you think we could pad the squad out with what we have currently I think you’d be very disappointed.

I watch a fair bit of the u21’s and there’s nobody even close to being a benchwarmer currently.

Totally agree with the concept and the model, I think it’s something we should be working towards long term (and I think thelwell had started to make strides towards that in a way) but it’s not imminent.

There’s nobody in the 21s or 18s who we could sub in for Doucoure currently. Armstrong maybe in a year or two, right now though he’s struggling to get minutes at derby.

He does work like a dog … the problem is that he also has the first touch of a bulldog , the shooting of a Jack Russell and the footballing IQ of a staffy

I agree with you, our current whipping boy

He has two goals and one assist all season but fun hypothetical I guess
