This guy will never feature for us. He simply doesn't want to put the yards in. Not played by successive managers. Dropped from England. Always looks miserable and uninterested. Has the odd exciting run, that never ends in a solid chance or goal. Very little end product, and zero defensive work rate. How people are banging on about him as if he is the clubs savior i'll never know.

pack his bags, drive him to the airport. Anything £20m+, good business.

His playing time has also been spread out. There have been moments but how could there be more when the opportunities haven't been? The flashes are enough for me, combined with the RBL loan, to say at a minimum we should have given him one good run. But yes his moments here are an assist vs Palace and a consolation game MotM vs Appollon. It isn't much but also how could it be?

As for the tactical understanding part I don't see that as a problem that wouldn't be solved with experience. Generally speaking our management needs to be willing to accept occasional mistakes from young players as a part of developing them. They won't be perfect at age 21. A bad performance shouldn't have them benched for months.

if his opportunities are limited, don't you think he would be determined to impress and grasp those opportunities when they come? Because every time I've seen him come on, he's been rubbish and lazy. He must know what the coaches want from him, more effort, more all round product, tracking back etc. Yet when he gets the chance, he never displays this.
He's had enough chances, he just doesn't seem to want to change, and only play the game his own way. Players like that will only go one way.

He's started 15 games for us in 3 years. That isn't enough chances. It is especially poor when we've had 2 seasons where he's been here as we played out the last two months with nothing more than 7th on the line. When you arent really playing for much you should be using young players and seeing what you have in them. Instead we've sat him (and others like Davies and Kenny) and not given them useful minutes.

The whole he's lazy, doesn't track back, doesn't play for anyone but himself crap is really lazy criticism for me. I've never felt like he does any of those things in matches. Apparently he's inconsistent in training and that's something he should sort but in games I don't see any of that.

If you are desperate to make the team then you should stand out in training. Work harder then anyone else and make it impossible not to be picked.
He appears not to do this.

There's also some point as a manager where you should say my team is bang average and I should try someone else even if they are inconsistent and may not play well. The safe managers we've had are happy to play Bernard or whoever because they always get 6 out of 10. At some point taking the chance on the guy who could be an 8 or a 4 is necessary. If you can work with that player and make him have more 8s and less 4s suddenly you might not be average anymore. It's easier to say when you arent the one at risk obviously but that's what it is.

That's really where my frustration is here. We are average and have a guy who might be able to be more than that but could also be total crap and we've decided we'd rather just be average than take a chance and risk having things go wrong.

One manager said he wasn't working hard in training. Also weird how the club who actually put him on the pitch when they said they would give him time have no issues. Maybe it's just me but if my manager didn't let me leave because he said I was a big part of what he wanted to do and then I barely got on the field for 4 months my motivation to work hard might slip just a bit.

And that's obviously going to bring up the sell him because he doesn't want to be here thing and that is true now. But whose fault is that?

We're all grateful that you're able to see the matrix though, so you can tell us that what we see at the game is wrong, and what you see on your TV is right.

What I'm telling you is writing someone off who has more natural ability to beat players with the than anyone else in the squad based off a half seasons worth of minutes spread over 3 seasons might just be misguided.

Three separate Everton managers have drawn the same conclusion on the lad. That's not to say he can't go on and have a good career but it's clearly a bad fit here and it is likely in everyone's best interests if we can move him on for a decent fee. Looking to apportion blame here or there is not going to solve anything and there are plenty of players praising the atmosphere at the club (Gomes being the most recent example), so if a talented young employee doesn't like his workplace then finding a new one is probably the right thing to do.
