Ademola Lookman

It isn't just Lookman though. We should have been testing Mina and Keane last year. If we told Gueye he could go in the summer than different set ups in midfield should have been tried. We didn't take proper advantage of having 5 competitive games at the end that meant very little.
Makes my blood boil when people claim some games ‘matter very little’ or some such.
They certainly matter to 40,000 people who attend them . We pay our money and we rightly expect the best team to be picked and everything possible done to secure a victory.
These games were PL games for God’s sake not some friendly. Any manager who disregarded such games would very quickly begin to lose support , and at that point in the season Silva needed to show what his teams were capable of or he and his team would be starting this season under a lot of unnecessary pressure.
For what it’s worth I like Lookman. I went to see Hertha play Leipzig when Lookman was on loan and he was instrumental in placing his team in a commanding position before being substituted around 60 mins.
But he clearly doesn’t do enough defensively to claim a place in a Silva side and obviously failed to impress in training.

I understand what you mean with the fans wanting to see the team win every game. I'm a foreign fan so I can't really argue on that front. What I will say is I do have tickets for my local NFL team and if they decided to try and do something for the future once the season is more or less finished I would support it. Sometimes the best thing for the future is to sacrifice the present a little bit and I'm ok with that.

For me judging wingers by defensive contribution is a poor way to do it. And when you have games like United away where Walcott doesn't track back and costs us it makes it more confusing. He had and still has the potential to be top class as an attacker and it will always disappoint me that we didn't really even try to unlock that.

Is it not in an NFL teams best interests to tank the end of a season? If they aint making play offs.

I mean I have no idea how the draft works.

But we did try and unlock it . We retained him for a season during which time he was part of the first team squad. He was coached, observed and weighed up at Finch Farm.
His relatively few match time opportunities suggest he rarely did enough in training to earn a starting place.
Sometimes it’s not a case of a player not being good enough it’s more a case of the player being unsuited to the teams style of play.

I get style matters but when you're 8th maybe the style should be less locked in and changed a bit to potentially suit different players.

That is generally true but I'm even thinking of last year with my team switching to rookie QB. It was due to injury originally but the team was crap before although not totally eliminated. I wanted to just leave the kid in and let him learn even if it threw the year away. Of course the team won 6 of 7 with him and made playoffs anyway but you can see what I'm saying I think.

Each league placing is worth an additional £1.9m so I’m not so sure the games at the end of the season do “mean very little”. If we’d have lost the last 4 games it could’ve cost us £7.6m.

Which is very little. I mean to me it would be a fortune but to a football club that has been in the Premier League for close to 30 years now it is very little.
