Ademola Lookman

W
He got a tap in Vs City
He got to play in the PL and the Bundesliga

We got more than we paid
Win - Win

Not our fault (that much) that he didn't take his chances
When the whispers of him missing London then welcoming moving to Germany surfaced I'm sure a few heads were scratched in the back room staff meetings.

Not our problem. Another sensible decision by the coaching staff; ability without the right attitude will give you the odd moment that makes you doubt yourself whether you got it wrong...the step over, the feint and the finish.

Ravel Morrison, Jesse Lingard, Kieran Dowell, Ademola Lookman, Christian Atsu, Ross Wrongley...perhaps Jadon Sancho all have natural talent in abundance.....more so on an individual and natural talent basis, but it’s rare that this raw talent sees them deliver on a regular basis or be accepted as integral to their team or their supporters. I may have included Raheem Sterling in this list two years ago, but he has matured and developed into the type of player the others on my list can only hope to aspire. Forget the hype, the tattoos, the image.....Sterling is one hell of a player, world class.

Ademola Lookman for all his apparent (and at times obvious) surly) attitude has the rare ability to make the difficult look easy. He can go past players on either foot, come inside, shoot and be a threat.....at his best. At his worst, he goes hiding, hugs the wing so he can be marked and makes the weakest of attempts to show for the ball....and when he re dives it, he is lose in possession and rarely tries to recover it. So, that’s the dilemma with Lookman.

He wouldn’t get in our current team today, never mind Leipzig’s. That we got more than we paid at this stage of his career says we got the better of the deal- sometimes it’s easier to focus on the decisions we get wrong than the ones - like Lookman on his past two years performances - we got right. He never saw himself as an player desperate to make it at Everton, so hard to feel any sympathy for a lad, like many others, who had talent in abundance, but lacked the other attributes to be a top player. As I say, not our problem.

Why is Sancho on that list?

And you're kidding yourself if you think we couldn't at least use him off the bench right now. Our creative players are a disgrace.

I said ...perhaps Sancho. Why? Dropped for league match against Borussia Monchengladbach for returning late, put on the bench by Zorc against Barcelona for another internal issue, put in the reserves the previous year. Forgot his passport for travel to Spurs game....all minor misdemeanours away from the pitch and probably all part of the maturity process in becoming a professional footballer when you are a teenage millionaire and international footballer. That’s why I said perhaps, because he is incredibly talented and may well be sold for over £100m.

But back to Lookman. I agree at his best, he can make a difference but the reality was his head and heart wasn’t in doing that for Everton on a consistent basis and his performances on the pitch often reflected that. I never doubted his ability, just his desire. I’m not even sure if he is a regular in Leipzig’s current match day squad, never mind playing. No issue if we disagree on Lookman but I thought it was the right decision to sell a player at a profit who didn’t want to be here and had delivered performances below the level we knew he was capable of. Where I do agree with you is that our current midfield is devoid of any creativity.....and desire. Not convinced Lookman would be the one to fix it.
