BBC Sport - Football - Togo withdraw from Africa Cup of Nations

Souleymane Habuba, spokesman for organisers the Confederation of African Football (CAF), said the tournament would proceed despite the attack.

"Our great concern is for the players, but the championship goes ahead," said Habuba, who questioned why Togo had elected to travel by road rather than flying.

"CAF's regulations are clear: teams are required to fly rather than travel by bus," he added.

What a pathetic statement, why didnt he just say "It was their own fault", shocking statement that.

How can they regulate how people travel?

Togo goalkeeper Kodjovi Obilale has reportedly died from gunshot wounds sustained in an ambush on the team bus in Angola, bringing the death toll from the attack to four.

..Two members of Togo's national team delegation and a driver also died following an ambush on the team's bus as it travelled to the African Cup of Nations.

Striker Jonathan Ayite told RMC radio: "Yes, he is dead, as well as our assistant coach (Amalete Abalo) and our press officer (Stanislas Ocloo). All three are dead."

RIP to them all.

On January 8, a bus carrying the Togo football team to the African Cup of Nations was fired at by a group of rebel terrorists of Cabinda Province, Angola, just after they had crossed the Congo border.[8] Obibale was one of the two players who were reported to have bullet wounds and two non-playing staff members were killed during the attack.[9] Later, Obibale was reported dead by some sources;[10] such reports were later dismissed by his club GSI Pontivy in a press announcement, stating the player was undergoing surgery in South Africa instead.

Or maybe not.

i heard he was touch and go but not dead, but regardless, its shocking and awful, i'm just thankful they weren't all injured/dead

Togo team are on their way home, withdrawn from the comp. All teams should do the same on three counts:
  • as a mark of respect for their fellow professionals
  • to make a point to the Angolan authorities - if the safety of sportsmen cannot be guaranteed then they do not deserve to host such a tournament.
  • to bring the CAF to their senses - what a crassly insensitive comment about travel arrangements.

FIFA also need to comment, and seriously look at the World Cup arrangements.

Awful situation, RIP to all victims.

The world cup is not in Angola. It's in South Africa.

I know that mate, I'm not stupid, but as Micky says:

I've spent a lot of time in Africa and it is a very corrupt continent, but never did I think something like this would happen towards footballers.

It may have consequences for the World Cup, but I do think that FIFA have already turned a blind eye to the crime in South Africa and the risk it poses in the summer. Jo'burg is the most dangerous city in the world.

spot on, all who died were sons, brothers, fathers, husbands, friends. The sickening attack has left the world stunned, it has terrified the witnesses and brought to light the problems in the area! ANC should be pulled, it is not safe where they are!

RIP to all those who died in the terrible attack.

But South Africa is less angola than England is Serbia.

Angola murder rate 40
South Africa 37

England 2.03
Serbia 1.46

I suppose. But the African nations do share 1 thing and thats is the highest murder rate in the world. If your gonna chat inaccurate assumptions, I suggest you check facts first.
