2019/20 Alex Iwobi

A pal of mine's a somewhat disaffected Arsenal fan. When he learned we got Walcott he waved his hands in the air and called him worthless. When he learned we got Iwobi he tugged his chin and went, "hmmmm." Advantage Iwobi.

Personally I would rather people be overly positive about a player than overly negative.

It’s not an either/or though mate, everyone can put their obvious bias to one side and just give a balanced opinion. Of course we all want Iwobi to be great and of course we all hope that he will.

But It doesn’t make you a superfan to keep suggesting he’s better than he is, it doesn’t help nor hinder Iwobi. It also doesn’t make anyone less of a fan to say that he needs to do more to justify his price tag than a good half at Lincoln.

If disagree tbh.

Inside football clubs now (life in general, schools etc) it’s all about positivity, building players up and believing in them so they play with out pressure and are relaxed.

I think negativity can transfer quickly through a fan base particularly with social media and message boards like this. This thread is an example of it....”Iwobi is not up to much, look at what the Arsenal fans think” it’s straight away fans reading that will be ready to say I’ve told you so and the pressure will in him after his first mistake.

The always trying to stay positive mentality and believing they’re going to win is something the likes of the RS do really well and we don’t hence why we fall apart in Derby’s and are generally beating on big occasions that matter before it even kicks off.

We’ve not been losing derbies because of a lack of positivity. They’ve not been reaching European cup finals fuelled on positivity. It’s because they have 4 or 5 top class players as part of a very good team put together by a top class manager.

We’ve not suffered from a lack of blind optimism on here either. Digne, in one season, has become “the best left back in the world”. Iwobi won’t be reading this forum with anticipation and on a matchday he’ll be supported the same as every other player in blue.

Iwobi may or may not go on to justify his price tag, I was certainly impressed by his 2nd half at Lincoln but there’s nothing wrong with saying “let’s not get carried away! It’s only Lincoln, he now needs to deliver that against league opposition too!”.

Over the years I’ve never took to much notice if Iwobi playing at arsenal, so I wasn’t that excited about us getting him here
but after his early showings, I’m quite impressed with him I think he will do well.

But you’ll be one of the first on here writing him off if he has a bad game tomorrow in his second league appearance. Solid and fair logic there.

I completely disagree.

They beat Barcelona last year cause their fan base turning believing it was possible, without that belief they would not have won that game IMO. I don’t think they even played well on the night and they had loads of bang average players in that starting 11 yet they fully believed it was on and that genuinely played s huge part in getting them over the line. We’d have not given ourselves a chance and would have threw our hand in before it even kicked off.

We’ve been losing derbies against awful Liverpool teams finished outside the European places and below us in the league not cause they’re better than us but cause we go there expecting to lose whilst they believe they only have to turn up to win. You can say it’s irrelevant but I don’t think it is. All this negativity / positivity spreads right through the fans, staff and players on both sides.

It’s actually something I give Marco massive credit for as I think he took away that inferiority complex last year and went toe to toe with them exceptionally well. He gets it, he says the right things and he fights our corner as I’d expect an Everton manager to.

The one thing I like about him, I’s he’s constantly looking to make runs of the back of the full back and centre back. Delph tried to find him a couple of times but over hit the pass. When they are both up to speed abs add Gomes & gbamin who also looks like he has a good range of passing. It could be a good weapon for us.

With Kean dropping deep and pulling a CB out of position, hopefully Iwobi & Richarlison can take advantage.

I personally think Iwobi will be best as an attacking centre midfielder in the long term.

I’ve always rated Oxlaide Chamberlain myself and I see Iwobi as a better version of him without the injuries.

Someone who’s started out wide but long term, his attributes are best suited to playing through the middle.

Maybe not ‘because of’ but I’d argue they’re definitely contributing factors.

Id go along with that. I couldnt really tell you what % it is but some teams are beaten before they step on the pitch. Everton teams have def had that in the past 20 years. Tbh i think our opposition tomorrow wolves have shamed us last season the way they played against the so called top 6. They went into them games thinking they were just as likely to get a result if they matched them. Manager had every single player in their shirts doing their jobs.
So i think there is something in that.

Im sort of hit and miss with the barca thing last year. Barca have collapsed away from home a few times in the CL. I know many non red fans who thought they would turn them over. Many paid for their holidays on the back of a bet.

Its about abilty, confidence, and positivity. What was encouraging about Iwogi and Kean at Lincoln is that they were both prepared to take on a shot from distance, and give the ball a good welly. Its a while since we've seen that on a regular basis.

Based on what? You’re wrong in any case. I didn’t write Gbamin off after the Palace performance. I didn’t write off any of our signings last year after a few games.

You can say “X had a good game, I hope that continues” or “Y was a bit naff today, he needs to step it up!” without either catastrophising or rhapsodising.

Digne is currently the best left back in World football mate.

Ask anyone.
