2019/20 Alex Iwobi

Reminds me alot of Mane. If he improves as much as him following a move then he'll be some asset.
The only way he is possibly similar to Mane is that he could go up a level because of a change in clubs. And I guess they play the same position. Otherwise they're completely different players.

I think if we get the Iwobi of Arsenal the past few years, then he's not really going to improve us.

Some early good signs though that perhaps we've spotted some traits in him that'll go to another level in a different setup - certainly has age on his side.

That's a gross over-exaggeration and is quite frankly ridiculous. I haven't compared Bolasie to Iwobi but you shouldn't be throwing about that term so willy nilly. You've referenced race as the only similarity that >you< recognise, it's odd that you've brought it up. That comparison between the two has nothing to do with appearance.

How about: they are both pacey, tricky players who generally start in wide positions, both joined from London based clubs for almost identical fees. Both of them score at a rate of roughly once every 10 games and both of them assist at roughly once every 6 games prior to joining us.

I haven't made this comparison but the suggestion that anyone has could be racist is a dangerous assertion.
Again it’s a lazy comparison. If these people comparing him to Bolasie had bothered to watch Iwobi they’d have seen he’s very different in his style.

People are too quick to write players off for self obsessive reasons.

This thread will be full of people back tracking sooner rather than later.

Thought the consensus was that he was decent under Emery last year?

Depends who you listen to really doesn't it? Emery brought in Pepe an Ceballos so must have thought he needed better and the consensus from Arsenal fans was one of derision at what we paid.

When I say 'I think if we get the Iwobi of Arsenal the past few years, then he's not really going to improve us' - I agree with Marco Silva that we need more goals from that position, if he continues his record at Arsenal, here - then he isn't really going to improve us.

But some players just go another level in another environment/setup, hopefully he's one of them.

I suppose I'm just more inclined to ask if he improves the team/our play as a whole and I believe he can, certainly from what I've seen recently anyway.

I also like his attitude.

People are too quick to write players off for self obsessive reasons.

And people are even quicker to profess players are top quality after a good half hour.

We've seen it with Mina too to be fair, it's not just Iwobi. That desperate for said player to work out that they lose all objectivity.

Any bad moments / performances are immediately forgotten or dismissed as "It's early days, give him a break!".

And any good touches / semi-decent 6.5/10 performances are lauded (irritatingly) as MOTM winning displays.

Amazingly players can improve from 21 to 24. Even at Arsenal he was better last year than 3 years ago which you would expect.

100% agree. Its mad. but i think thats football in general now with so many outlets needing to fill air time its so over hyped. A basic 30 yard pass in years gone by was just that. A basic pass. Now its omg did you see that world class pass.

are you still annoyed that people said he had a great game but it doesn't count for you because it was against Lincoln

We are a very direct side that likes to stretch the pitch, so I assume he will do better here than at Arsenal. He has looked promising thus far.

I did not see a consensus at all. I saw, and still see, a significant amount of Arsenal fans wishing they never sold him.
Seems to me he had a split 'love or hate' following at Arsenal.
