The point isn't that they're world class players, but that they're unlikely to cost a team so many points that they can't finish in the top 4. Pickford would get by for me, mainly because of the position he plays.
Pickford costs us a lot of points over the seasons though

Anyway wobs, even if slightly inconsistent he’s still easily one of our better players and easily one of the most influential

A team is more than the sum of its parts.

How many of the 04/05 squad were top 4 players?

The sooner this team starts playing like one the better.

We're asking miracles of a manager if we want to qualify with a team anything close to the ability of the current crop, for me.

There's no doubt we need to establish our "identity" and start playing like more of a cohesive unit though.

He'll also win us some. He's that kind of keeper. Basically I don't think if you put him into any of the sides that finished in the top 4 last season, they'd have struggled to make the top 4 as a result. The fact that he'd be asked to do less as a keeper in a better team is also a factor here.

First off his ability to pass the ball forward is top class. Very few players who are more consistent with getting it into dangerous areas. The key is finding out how to best incorporate that into the team since it doesn't look like he's at the same level with chance creation and goal scoring.

The second thing is that we are simply not good enough to buy players who are the finished product and at the level we want our team to be. There are two ways to get players at that level. One is to cherry pick the ones who are undervalued for some reason at bigger clubs. That's essentially what we did with Digne. But there are only so many of those around. The other, more effective way is to buy young players and turn them from good to great. We cannot simply go out and buy top class players very often because other clubs that have more attractive qualities will also want those players.
Leicester seem to do ok....ndidi, Madison, tielemans to name but a few. They are out there. We just need to find them. We always put obstacles up as to why we don’t progress but other teams manage it. Sheff utd are fifth! Wolves have gone from championship side to Europa league in two seasons. Leicester, I’m sure in two years time, could be top four regulars. Liverpool were about 8th four seasons back! Tottenham went from under achievers to champions league regulars in about two seasons. We just make excuses for a really poorly run football club.

He needs a manager who will push him to the next level. Not really sure if that is Silva. Have any players really improved considerably since he arrived?
Hard to judge exactly why players have improved (age, experience, coaching, getting used to the league, just in a good run of form etc) but you can put forward a good argument that Keane, Holgate, Mina, Davies, Richarlison, DCL, Bernard, Sigurdsson and Schneiderlin are all better than they were I think.

Totally agree with this. I've said it a few times, we've got so used to being unable to find value in the market over the last 5 years that some fans would have you believe it just doesn't exist anymore. It absolutely does, and many other clubs have found it with regularity while we've become obsessed with paying £30m for everyone we buy.

All the talent raw talent in the world that needs developing, but hes a game changer. This is the thee we are picking players from these days, buying players at 50% the finished article that need developing.

His concentration and focus needs work, he needs work on his control and he needs work on when to turn on the raz mataz and when to speed up and slow things down simply and not over complicate.
