He’s not a right midfielder in a million years, at least not starting for a team looking to get in the mix for top 4. He’s toiling away manfully, we have nobody else to play there but it’s not a long term solution.

Out of possession and off the ball is where it really shows, particularly dealing with movement and runners off the ball - he switches off. He’s a forward brought up and schooled by Wenger at Arsenal, forwards didn’t have to defend - it was a similar ethos to Bobby Martinez here. He did an interview last year saying the biggest difference between Arsenal and Everton was that he had to defend and contribute out of possession and it shows.

Am not really enjoying 4411 so hopefully we don’t play it much next season. Seems like Carlo’s go to set up when he wants to play defensively though, which has been quite often this season, so we may well be seeing it again. Just hope we sign actual right and left midfielders to play it.
Have to agree he can switch off at times. I don't think it's an effort thing but maybe a culture(Wenger) or defensive intelligence issue.

I thought he was decent tonight. He’s not great, he never will be, and truth be told he was an appalling signing at the price, but people have just decided he’s useless and it’s a shame that means he can’t get any credit even when he does ok.

Again though we can look at colemans involvement in the goal for example was the rest of his game good enough. If we win the game they can get away with it by all means.
You've in three posts moved from "he gave possession away too much" to "he didn't have any impact in the final third" to "well he wasn't involved all the time." It's ok to just say you don't like the guy.

Even though he is an average attacking mid, you can see his movement off the ball and quick one touch togger reeks of Wenger's Arsenal. Which isn't actually a bad thing, considering some of the absolute crabs he's now playing alongside.

He put a nice ball into Sigurdsson just outside the six yard box who pirouted for some reason before hitting the ball at about 2mph.

Was it him who gave the ball to Digne in loads of space at the edge of the box in the second half too? The one where he inexplicably just hoofed it high into the air?
Goals and assists in the last two seasons at Everton GO.......

It’s nothing to do with effort, you’re right. It’s everything to do with a player with forwards instincts and who has never been taught or had emphasis put on positioning out of possession and dealing with movement of runners. Right mid in a defensive 4411 is totally, totally different to playing as a wide forward in, say a 433. He’s doing a job, is capable of good moments and good games but not a long term option in this formation/position.
