Fernandinho was 29
Matic to United 29
Shevchenko to Chelsea was 30
Fabregas to Chelsea 29
David Luiz to Chelsea was 29 mark 2

and that’s before taking into account inflation which has been massive the last few years.
Makelele was over 30 when he went to chelsea am sure. Ibra when he went to PSG was old. Loads of examples out there.

All of those teams were within a player or two of winning the title which is exactly the point I'm making.
Why is that relevant.

We want to buy better quality players and so you pay the money you need to pay for them.

it’s just a weird irrelevant point. We shouldn’t spend this money because we aren’t good enough is what you are saying.

We have plenty of young players who we can develop. We need to balance that out with experience and players at their peak.

Allan looks to have all of the qualities that we lack. He will massive improve a team that is currently less than the sum of its parts. Players like this will change that.

And 29m is about par. It really isn’t a lot of money.

There are lots of arguments against signing older players (i'm torn on it)and I do understand the perspective that as an exception to get you over the line to a title it's ok- however I also think there's a compelling case here.

We want to be targetting the best younger players. To be able to clinch deals, we probably need to be in Europe. To be at that level we need to either be very patient, or a quick boost.

I don't think most of the fans are patient. I also don't think the majority shareholder is.

We are left with an incoherent policy to some degree as a result.

It's relevant because a team that is close to the title can have huge swings in their fortune by adding a older players who fills a gap and pushes them to the title. A twelfth place team with 5 gaps plugging one with a 29 year old is quite different unless of course we have no desire to play in the CL or close to that level.

Europe helps but for me as important is having success developing young players. That means giving young players playing time and that means not buying many older players. It's a tough process regardless.

Wonder what style of announcement vid we’ll go for this year?

2016 it was the full player in the player’s big blue face, 2017 it was zoom zoom round the building oh yeah there’s the player he’s smiling like a gimp and he’s crap, 2018 we got Jimmy the kit man to bring his drone in to work, and can’t remember what we did last year

Nothing cos we signed everybody on deadline day.

Out the box thinking.

You know how you make a successful team? You buy better players than the ones you have. Then you buy better players than that.

you know why Liverpool got successful? Because they stopped doing what you are proposing and filling the squad with average and potential and starting spending money on exactly what they needed.

it took them 5 years but then they won the PL.

That’s how you do it. You go for your top targets. Try to add a couple a year instead of 5. If you don’t get zaha you wait and ignore iwobi and do without.

*that’s* what we need. Stability. better players. Evolution

Allan sorts the midfield for at least 3-4 seasons. Who knows where we’ll be then.

A luxury in the PL which is why 99% of PL teams end up buying talent or you get Pogba/Sancho scenarios because it's the toughest league in the world we all can't be Bayern Munich 1 team league who can give young players game time and still batter teams 6-0, Managers don't want to risk youth too much unless it's crazy talent because you get sacked if you're in the bottom 3 by December.
