I mean he was obviously an Ancelotti signing...
I agree but it was sanctioned by the DOF, who’s record since he came in has been atrocious. Another ageing player on a huge contract that we’re now stuck with, or will lose a lot of money on if we’re lucky enough to find a buyer.

Whatever way you want to dress it up, he’s been another poor signing.

Italian league is a joke of course so it skews ability, and there's every chance he just can't cut the higher quality league in England. But it's one season and he was decent pre-hamstring injury IMO. He's nowhere near the top of my list of concerns with Everton.
There are an awful lot of concerns of course.

He gets another season for me but he needs a huge improvement and hopefully to stay clear of injuries. At his age I worry that the niggly ones are going to keep coming.

Is he even a Brazilian international?

In fact some of his worst performances were alongside Doucoure at the back end of the season.

Doucoure is box to box, what happened was we had no outball to make it stick due to a non existent attacking midfield, so whenever DCL didn't hold it up, the opposition would break, Doucoure would be out of position and bypassed and you often had Allan facing two or three on one.

If can't be stressed how shambolic this squad balance is when we try to attack. It's why Ancelotti just gave up and went full Allardyce.

Nothing was sanctioned by Brands. Ancelotti came in and demanded his players and he got two of them. Didn't matter what Brands said he couldn't block the wishes of a very high profile manager who we had recently acquired.

Absolute rubbish. Do you understand the role of DOF?? Saying that, I don’t think Marcel understands the role either.

Yeah so far but it was obviously a signing to please Ancelotti. Like every appointment so far the manager just gets to pick whatever players he wants to bring in making Brand's role worthless.

The role varies according to the nuances of each club that employs one. Brands is not the owner and if Moshiri promised Carlo a few players then he was getting them. Absolutely zero to do with MB this one.

Yes
And you do?
Yes thanks… Do you?

Not sure what point you’re trying to make with this question. Unless you’re suggesting that the role of DOF is simply to pander to the requests of a manager for specific players. The point I’m making is that the role of DOF is to have overall responsibility for the playing squad. Yes the manager must agree to signings. But a DOF is responsible for implementing a footballing philosophy and identifying players to fit that structure. He is responsible for structuring transfers both in and out of the club.

Brands’ record is pretty poor on both accounts but this is probably a discussion for the Brands thread.

My point which I stand by is that Allan has been another poor recruit, under the reign of our current DOF.

Yes. He's a terrier - one of those who identifies dangers and rats across the line throwing niggling tackles. A ball winner. If you watched him at Napoli you'd have seen it more than you do with us.

At Napoli he was playing defensive midfield under Ancelotti.

I believe that is the only time hes played that role as otherwise he was in centre midfield winning the ball higher up the pitch and carrying the ball forward.

Btw the time under Ancelotti at napoli is probably his worst season...until last season with us

He even made a few runs last year where you could see he could clearly carry the ball. Get him either side of a deeper mid in a 4-3-3 with Doucouré and maybe it would work? Just not sure we’d have enough creativity unless we signed a right-footed Digne.

just hate him as the deepest mid. Not sure how I feel with him in a 2-man midfield either.

He has to play with a ball winner next to him like Gana or at least a good all rounder with positional discipline like Neves.

The same goes for Doucoure...

Gbamin or Davies behind either/both would probably work on paper.
