2022/23 Amadou Onana

Garner (as ive said since we were linked) is a good all rounder.. has a bit of everything. You could call him 'all action' in a way and I note the comparisons with Carrick but I see him more of an Owen Hargreaves.

That type of player can play with anyone in midfield.

We then have Onana who has been a defensive midfielder all his career. Someone that both Lampard and now Dyche are playing further up the pitch. They say theyre trying to improve his 'all round game'.

He's robust, big, athletic and can tackle and pass. His stats have had him at the top end for defensive play comparable with the best in the division.

Where we fall apart is having two midfielders who have no positional sense or passing ability. Theyre pure athletes in Doucoure and Gana.

Others have mentioned Gibbs-White and I'd agree that having a player like him would be beneficial.

But the main thing is playing Garner and Onana together in the centre. Then bringing in players to help them. Move on from the Gana / Doucoure 'type' and bring in an attacking playmaker and we'd look a very different proposition.

Posted this (Garner thread) with 2 links to stats comparing him favourably with the best midfielders in the league.

21 year old kid in his first full season as a starter anywhere.

Needs to learn the nasty side of the game -- which is what Dyche was trying to develop introducing him to Steven Defour.

He'll develop but needs to play alongside Garner and a new attacking midfielder.

The problem with Onana is that he has a tendency to coast through games and you barely notice he's on the pitch. I guess it's normal for a 21 year old learning the game, but it hasn't helped our cause.

From a business point of view we have to sell him if we get a decent offer. He might develop into a superstar but also based on what we've seen there's a good chance he might not. We're not a top 10 team like Brighton who can nurture and wait for a talent to improve. We need better players in the squad right now.

I hope he's dragged into the manager's office on Monday and made to watch their goal on repeat for an hour and asked what he did wrong. Like others have said, we're better when he isn't playing. In any case we've either seen the last of him in an Everton shirt or we'll see the last of him next week, so he's unlikely to listen to anything Dyche tells him at this stage.

Fans have different opinions so there are bound to be contradictions - but if we can't afford a young player time to improve then there isn't much point signing them. It seemed that was the point of bringing Gana back and hedging our bets with Garner- and here we are.

Moyes had Baines, Jagielka, Fellaini and Coleman who were all a little flakey to start off with.

If we are broke obviously we'd have to sell - but don't be pushing him out of the door at a loss.

That Moyes team did have time to improve players and bed them in. The problem I see with Onana is that he doesn't improve and his high value drops down.

There is that risk - he's had one PL season, two managers and a dysfunctional team though - so I'd say there is still some hope.

Anyway, if it was like Gordon and we sell to pay off some debt then buy nobody else - it just leaves the squad even worse.

Slightly more disapointed him stopping and switching off for the goal rather than bringing down traore. One quick look to his left and he would have seen the wolves player totally unmarked. Maybe thats why we're 4th from bottom. All the players were ball watching, none had awareness of unmarked players arriving.

An absolutely dire signing, hopefully we can recoup some of what we paid

That's a bit of an over reaction. You either buy seasoned players, but they have lower ceilings and not much chance in the way of selling on for more than what you paid or like in this case we have bought someone with all the right attributes to go to the top, the chance to generate a large profit but you have to expect those players to make more mistakes as they are still learning.

Although granted we did overpay for that promise in this case, but again that's due to how good he could eventually become. I'm sure we would make our money back on him and he deserves some patience.
